Preparing Future Clinicians
Have you ever met someone with an unwavering passion for helping others? If not, then meet Jan Price, Director of Financial Aid at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This academic institution is one of the largest osteopathic schools of medicine in the country, and it’s here that she dedicates her time to 600+ medical students.
Serving a large number of students with multiple needs may be a lofty task but, Jan is proud to stand by VCOM’s mission, “to prepare globally minded, community-focused physicians for the rural and medically underserved areas of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and the Appalachian Region, and to improve human health especially of those most in need.” Moreover she is inspired by the impact that her students can and will have on these communities by providing primary care to some of the neediest in our nation. As a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Ambassador, Jan feels that she can also be a part of this impact.
Jan has been an NHSC Ambassador since 2001, and takes this responsibility seriously. In countless ways over the last 15 years, she has demonstrated her commitment to the NHSC through preparing future primary care clinicians in her community. On an on-going basis, she assists potential and current students in preparing their NHSC program applications. Her steadfast promotion of the NHSC scholarship and loan repayment program opportunities has resulted in her providing 8-10 NHSC presentations on a weekly basis.
Taking on a NHSC Ambassador role was a natural fit for Jan. She assists her students in navigating through the financial aid process and expanding their financial literacy. However, her real joy has been helping her students to pursue and achieve their educational and career goals, while knowing that that her work will have a lasting impact on many communities around the country.
The NHSC is very grateful to have Jan Price as part of our Ambassador team and for her continuous passion, commitment and service. Her commitment to the Corps and to the community she serves speaks volumes.
