New! Opportunity to serve on a detail with the Department of Homeland Security's Volunteer Force

As U.S. Customs and Border Protection continues to encounter large numbers of individuals along our Southwest Border, DHS needs your assistance.

The Volunteer Force is seeking current federal, permanent civilian employees, GS-9 and above to serve on 60-day reimbursable details along the Southwest Border (note: this is not a promotion opportunity). Specifically, DHS needs volunteers to support two critical areas: general support (no special skills needed); and data entry for employees who speak Spanish (IT training will be provided).

Visit USAJOBS for instructions on how to apply to the DHS Volunteer Force. Interested employees must discuss this opportunity with their supervisor and obtain prior approval.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Neil Skidmore at surgecapacityforce@gsa.gov.

To feature an opening in the next Week in Review, use the OCFO Week in Review submissions form.

New! Special CFC Solicitation

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is authorizing a special CFC solicitation period that will open the CFC online donation portal from April 18, 2022, through June 30, 2022. This will provide an opportunity for federal employees, members of the military, postal workers, and retirees to create a new gift or an extra gift to support their favorite CFC-participating charities — including those that aim to ease the burden on people in Europe and refugees around the world impacted by the war in Ukraine — online or through the CFC mobile app.

Reminder: It's Time for Mid-year Reviews

As we reach the mid-way point of the fiscal year, it is time for mid-year performance reviews. Your review provides an excellent opportunity for two-way communication with your supervisor. Use it to assess your performance against expectations and goals described in your performance plan. Take this opportunity to have a productive discussion with your supervisor about your performance and priorities — it is a learning experience and one that will only improve our ability to accomplish the mission.

Please acknowledge your mid-year in HR Links by May 31, 2022. Use this job aid for step-by-step instructions on acknowledging your mid year progress review in HR Links.

IT Spending Data!

GSA's very own OGP has launched an updated version of the federal IT dashboard — the place to go to track federal spending on IT. The modernized system collects and displays agency IT cost and management data, including IT cost, schedule, and contract data received from agencies through their internal capital planning and investment control tools. Curious about how GSA has been spending our IT dollars? Go check out the dashboard!

Shout Outs

Every week we will feature OCFO colleagues who have been recognized by their peers for their great work and character. This is a quick, easy, and fun way to acknowledge and thank one another. To recognize one (or more) of your peers in the next Week in Review, use the OCFO Shout Outs Google Form.

Reminder: Continuous Leadership Journey - Public Service Motivation

This month’s CLJ provides resources to help you get and stay motivated as you serve in the public sector.

Videos
Meaningful Motivators (7 minutes):
When team members choose which word gives them the most meaning at work—“me,” “team,” “customer,” “company,” or “society—about 20 percent choose each word. This means that you as the leader must tell five stories at once, one for each group.

Motivate by Satisfying Psychological Needs (3 minutes):
High-quality motivation comes from satisfying the three psychological needs that are foundational to all human beings.

The Neuroscience of Motivation (3 minutes):
The brain responds to stimuli as threats or rewards. The threat response is five times stronger than the reward response, so threats get more attention, but also reduce creativity and collaboration. Rewards produce better, faster, and more sustainable results.

Course
Managing Motivation during Organizational Change (40 minutes):
A key challenge for managers is motivating and engaging employees during times of organizational change. To survive and grow in volatile markets, organizations have to embrace change; they have to innovate and adapt. In this course, you'll learn change management techniques to help you recognize and manage employee stress, as well as your own stress, during periods of change. You'll also learn about common reactions to change, and strategies for managing change to enable you to engage, motivate, and support employees.

Register to attend the April 27 facilitated discussion on public service motivation through GSA's Online University.
