Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act

Over 100 senior agency leaders met on June 26 at the Union League Club to discuss the historical impact of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and the civil rights issues of today.

Keynote Speaker, Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman, United States District Judge of the Northern District of Illinois, reflected on her experience.

A diverse panel of leaders shared examples of how the Act is still relevant today in ensuring opportunities for all Americans. Through personal and professional experiences, each panelist brought forth the modern day civil rights conversation. Highlights of the discussion and questions from the audience focused on strides made over the last half century for the Muslim-American experience, inequality in our education system, economic disparity, disability awareness, and transgender equality. Members of the panel included:

  • Dr. Samuel Betances, Founder & CEO, Souder, Betances, and Associates Inc.
  • Dr. Tahera Ahmad, Associate University Chaplain, Northwestern University
  • Mara Keisling, Executive Director, National Center for Transgender Equality
  • Rabbi Michael Siegel, Senior Rabbi, The Norman Asher Rabbinic Chair, Anshe Emet Synagogue
  • Gloria Castillo, President & CEO, Chicago United
  • Marca Bristo, President & CEO, Access Living

Shared Neutrals Alternative Dispute Resolution Program (SNAP)

Are you or your colleagues experiencing conflict in your workplace?

Conflict and discord in the workplace can affect the quality of our work in the office. Early mediation can provide both parties with increased understanding and an opportunity to move forward.

The Chicago FEB sponsors the Shared Neutrals Alternative Dispute Resolution Program (SNAP), which is available to Federal agencies at no cost and provides an opportunity for early mediation. In fiscal year 2013, the Chicagoland Federal community saved over $765,000 by utilizing SNAP.

To arrange a mediation for your agency, a representative or liaison should:

1) Review the Mediation Summary and Services
2) Complete the Mediation Request Form
3) Have parties sign the Agree to Mediate Form
4) Email above, completed documents to SNAP Intake Coordinator, Andrea Bruce at bruce.andrea@dol.gov

Devolution Training and Tabletop Exercise

On Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21, twenty COOP leaders from ten agencies met for a Devolution Planning Workshop which provided participants with the tools and hands-on experience necessary to develop their organization’s devolution plans and procedures, as well as an opportunity to network with their colleagues.

Participants learned to:

• Identify the conditions under which devolution would be appropriate for their agency

• Describe the activation protocols or triggers for devolution of their agency

• Tailor the Devolution Template to meet their organization’s needs

• Identify special considerations for devolution planning

• Develop their organization’s devolution plan

As a follow-up activity, on Tuesday, July 1, fifteen COOP leaders from eight agencies attended a Devolution Tabletop Exercise which continued to build on the workshop from May.  FEMA experts assisted agency COOP leaders through a Pandemic Devolution Exercise to test the devolution plan for their office operations.

WellFeds: Engaging Employees around Health & Wellness

Did you know the skin is the body’s largest organ? It protects us from the elements, but now that the sun is out in full effect, it’s important to think about how to return the favor and protect our skin. Test your UVIQ! Take this interactive quiz to find out how much you know about protecting yourself from the sun’s UV rays.

The WellFeds Campaign “Federal Employees: Active and Healthy…Working Well” continues its intergovernmental efforts to improve the culture of Chicago Federal workplaces through the promotion and facilitation of employee health and wellness.

November 12 and 13 will mark the annual FEB Health and Benefits Fair and WellFeds has begun planning to not only ensure you receive information to help you pick the benefits plan that’s best for you, but also to coordinate education and resources around food and nutrition, physical activity and sedentarism, and stress management. This year’s fair will allow for you to take part in free screenings to know your numbers, such as your blood pressure and BMI, and will provide confidential HIV Testing among other free offerings.

In other news, the Campaign is working hard to bring healthier food and beverage options in your building’s vending machines – more information to come.

We welcome any and all Federal staff to join us in these efforts to enhance your health and wellness options. Please contact Vince Parisi to volunteer or learn more.
