High-Performing Commercial RTUs

If you missed our last webinar, “High-Performing Commercial Rooftop Units (RTUs),” you can now access a recording of it on YouTube. You can also view the presentation slides.

Thanks to all the presenters and to participants for their excellent questions, some of which are answered below.

Q&A

Q: Are there other manufacturers whose RTUs meet DOE's Advanced RTU Campaign Challenge for higher efficiency?

A: Yes, there are now 95 different RTU models that meet the minimum CEE Tier 2 specifications.

To find a qualifying RTU that is < 5.5 tons, go to the CEE directory. Select the product type (Split or Packaged Air Conditioners), then select the appropriate filters including Phase (Commercial) and CEE Tier (CEE Tier 2).

For RTUs that are >= 5.5 tons, go to the AHRI directory. Search the Commercial database under “Unitary Large Equipment” and “AHRI Rating Conditions.” Select “Conduct Advanced Search” and then enter the desired EER and IEER efficiency levels. There are 1000’s of products in the database because even a minor variation in a product number results in a separate entry, so the more filters you can apply the better.

Q: What is the expected payback range @ $0.10/kWh for replacing an RTU?

A: There are lots of variables that go into calculating payback, including building load, type, and location. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has created an RTU comparison calculator that can help you select an RTU.

Q: What are the maintenance requirements?

A: The test-bed RTU has been in place for about three years and the only maintenance has been routine filter changes.

Q: What are high-performing RTU noise levels?

A: Because they are variable-speed, they are a lot quieter than standard RTUs.
