Winter 2018

Dear SFTool Community,

The Sustainable Facilities Tool (SFTool) – sftool.gov – continues to evolve as new technologies, research, and best practices emerge.

GSA's Office of Federal High-Performance Buildings is excited to share our latest features which include:  the Cost-Effective Upgrades Tool, a new Homepage, and SFTool Product Search as well as a new Framework for Managing Climate Risks to Federal Agency Supply ChainsContinuing Education Credit for FEDSAT, (Federal Facilities Skills Assessment Tool) and a  FEDSAT interface for supervisors.

We’d like to make it easier to work with the many SFTool community members who represent organizations active in the high-performance building and purchasing space. If you are interested in partnering more closely with the SFTool to promote our mutual missions let us know more through our Partnership Form.

Now Featuring

Plan: Cost-Effective Upgrades (CEU) Tool - Use the new CEU tool to understand which upgrades and energy conservation measures could be most cost-effective based on the size and location of your building. To help with procurement, the tool also generates reports outlining each upgrade, including its potential economic benefits.

Homepage - Our newly redesigned homepage makes it easier to dive into content. Check out the trending pages feature to learn something new. We’ve also updated our Learn landing page to feature Energy, Water, and Health topics and streamlined the Explore landing page to help you jump straight to specific pages.

SFTool Product Search -  Our new Product Search simplifies sustainable product procurement for vendors and buyers. Search over 5,700 brands and more than 300,000 products that align with federal sustainability requirements. The search allows you to sort compliant products by energy and water performance, create projects, and even gather the documentation you need to streamline the procurement process. We’re also excited to announce that SFTool Product Search recently won a Leadership Award for Best Case Study by the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council.

Plan:   Framework for Managing Climate Risks to Federal Agency Supply Chains-GSA developed a supply chain risk management framework to provide guidance to Federal agencies ready to assess observed and expected climate or weather-related risks (e.g., extreme heat waves, tropical storms and hurricanes, wildfires, etc.) to supply chains and develop plans to minimize those risks. The process is intended to reveal 1) whether changes to existing risk management practices may be necessary to accommodate observed and expected climate and weather related risks; and 2) what those changes should be.

Assess:  Continuing Education Credit for FEDSAT - You can now get one free hour's worth of continuing education / professional development by passing the Federal Facilities Skills Assessment Tool (FEDSAT)! FEDSAT is approved by the Green Business Certification Institute (GBCI) for credit toward the continuing education requirements for the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) credentials including the LEED AP. Completion of FEDSAT may also count as self-directed learning for other professional certifications. Check with your certifying body for more information.

Assess: FEDSAT Supervisor Interface - GSA supervisors can now assign specific competencies to employees and track progress. Please email us if you’re interested in using this feature.

Visit SFTool for these and other exciting features. Send us your feedback and share SFTool (and this newsletter!) with colleagues. Most importantly, put what you learn into practice!

Best Regards,

The GSA SFTool Team
