From Alaska to Alabama, GSA Child Care Centers nationwide celebrated Week of the Young Child (WOYC). Here is a sample of what our GSA centers did to celebrate:
Tundra Tykes, Anchorage, AK, celebrated with the NAEYC themes. On Musical Monday children explored beats and connected to music through dance and movement. Families shared a meal on Taco Tuesday and made masterpieces using recycled materials on Artsy Thursday.
SSA, Birmingham, AL, celebrated Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday, and Family Fridays. The children made pizza for Tasty Tuesday. On Family Friday, breakfast “on-the-go” was provided for parents and families were invited to read a book.
At Ziggurat Child Development Center, Laguna Niguel, CA, children and their families learned how to create a salad and salsa garden. The children also planted flowers on their playground garden.
Clever Kids Learning Center, Denver, CO, celebrated Music Monday with a parent band, the Amber Giraffes (named by the audience). The Band rocked the “Stadium” with more than 100 adoring fans on their feet dancing!
Colonnade Child Care Center, Denver, CO, hosted its 2nd Annual Taste of Colonnade. Families and staff brought in food to share and enjoy each other's company.
 Day Early Learning at Fort Harrison, Indianapolis, IN, held daily activities. On work Together Wednesday, they held Garden Day and parent helpers joined in as well! The children are excited to see their flowers and vegetables grow!
Stars and Stripes Learning Station, Battle Creek, MI, participated in a walk organized by Morale, Welfare and Recreation at the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center. The children walked to the Federal Center and planted blue pinwheels in recognition of child abuse month.
Kinderplatz Child Care and Education Center, Bloomington, MN, children made purple art pieces, guitars out of tissue boxes, egg and paper plate shakers, and wore wacky outfits with wild hair dos.
Cleveland FedKids, Cleveland, OH, celebrated with a family luncheon and finished off with framed pictures and a fruit salsa.
Columbia Federal Child Development Center, Columbia, SC, explored a food truck. The children learned how to place food orders supporting communication and language skills.
Memphis IRS Service Center, Memphis, TN, the children discovered cooking together connects math with literacy skills, science, and more using recipe cards to create a healthy fruit smoothie popsicle..
 Green Byrne Child Care Center, Philadelphia, PA, had a "Spring Fling" Dance at the end of the Week of the Young Child.
Kathy Herward Child Care Center, Andover, MA, the children enjoyed music activities, field trips, building together, grandparents day, and a magic show.
Ys Early Childhood Program, St. Albans, VT, hosted Big Rig Day. Children and their families explored trucks, fire trucks, police cars, farm equipment, and dump trucks at the municipal building. The children visited the elementary school where they enjoyed hands-on activities
Diplotots CDC, Washington, DC, held a Carnival celebration. Children and parents participated in a face painting station, tattoo station, photo booth, smoothie station and karaoke.
FERC CDC, Washington, DC, held many exciting and fun activities. On Friday, the children, families and faculty celebrated the culture of their center community with a Heritage Potluck.
Just Us Kids, Washington, DC, followed daily themes and each classroom did something special each day to mark the day. As the grand finale, they invited all families to join the rain room for a fun art session.
US Kids CDC, Washington, DC, held week long celebrations including Music Monday with a toddler marching band and a Friday Family Fun Day celebration in the park.
The Little Eagles Child Care Center, Kearneysville, WV kicked off with Music Monday!! The center sends a huge shout out to Dan and Sharon Turner for teaching them new songs.
Thanks to all who participated in the May Board networking call. There was a good exchange of ideas and support for Boards who face many of the same challenges across the country.
May is the time for Boards to do some spring cleaning. Consider looking at your by-laws to see if they need a “spring refresh”. Typically, by-laws originated during the Board’s inception, so they may be due for a review to ensure they are still relevant and meet the Board’s current needs. By-laws specify the Board’s operating rules and regulations and typically contain:
- Board corporate name
- Board mission statement
- Board composition and duties
- Board specifications for meetings, membership, quorum, committees, and elections
- Board fiscal framework, such as fiscal year, dissolution of assets, audits, etc.
If your Board amends by-laws, make sure you check with your state requirements. |
