February is National Children's Dental Health Month.  Each year, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.

This year’s NCDHM campaign slogan is, “Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile” and is aimed at teaching children about the importance of brushing twice a day for two minutes a day, limiting snacks and eating healthy daily.

Quote of the Month:

"I have found the best way      to give advice to your children  is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it."

- Harry S. Truman

New Center Opens in San Francisco

gsdfgsdfgsd

On February 2, GSA Region 9 celebrated the ribbon cutting for new leases at 75 Hawthorne Street in San Francisco, including a new child care facility: Kids by the Bay Financial District.  The new facility is a satellite of the existing child care center, Kids by the Bay Civic Center, and adds approximately 51 new spaces for children 6 weeks to 5 years, with an emphasis on infant and toddler care. The child care facility was phase five of a project that began in 2011.  “Child care services have been an important topic in the San Francisco federal community over the last couple of years, sparking many discussions,” said Dan Brown, GSA Acting Regional Administrator. “We conducted a feasibility study to see how GSA could best support our federal family’s needs. This child care center was developed to meet those needs.”

Thanks to everyone who helped make this project possible.

Valentine's Day is a time of showing appreciation for the ones we love and the Rainforest Kids Child Care Center in Puerto Rico did just that.  The children at the center created homemade Valentine Thank You cards for GSA Building Manager Juan Gonzalez.  The cards were presented by the Director, Aida Herrans on behalf the the children and staff.

Thank you Mr. Gonzalez for supporting the center and the GSA Child Care Program.

Board Business: Board Appreciation

In recognition of the volunteers who work on child care center Boards supporting their local centers, we want to let you know how much your work and time is appreciated.  Your support and input is invaluable to center successes.

Celebrating your own success and milestones should be incorporated in to your culture as well.  Some center boards hold appreciation luncheons at the end of the year and give special certificates to departing members. Other centers have Board appreciation day or month and present the Board members with thank you cards or framed art from the children.  Letters of recognition from your agencies can also be presented to Board members for their service.  Birthday cards are an easy way to recognize each Board member and the important work they do throughout the year.

Another way of letting your Board members know their work is important is a dedicated bulletin board by the entrance of the center with photos of the Board members and a write-up about their role or why they joined the Board.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), realizes that collaboration among the stakeholders is an essential factor in a quality early childhood education program.  Anything you can do as a Board to foster that spirit of collaboration is one more step toward achieving and maintaining quality for your program.  Have a great month, and please know the Board work you do is greatly appreciated by the children and families who use your center.
