S.D. Miss. Bankr.: Phishing Scam: Fake Notice of Electronic Filing (NEF) Emails
U.S. Courts sent this bulletin at 11/06/2024 03:35 PM ESTSubject: Phishing Scam: Fake Notice of Electronic Filing (NEF) Emails
The federal judiciary has become aware of a nation-wide phishing scam targeting federal court filers with fake Notice of Electronic Filing (NEF) emails.
A legitimate NEF from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Mississippi will have these characteristics:
- Sender will be: ECF-Notification_Do-Not-Reply@mssb.uscourts.gov
- An NEF will never include an attachment.
- An NEF will always contain Case Name, Case Number, Document Number, and Docket Text.
- Case Number and Document Number links will always start with https://ecf.mssb.uscourts.gov/.
- An NEF will not demand a response.
- If you are not sure whether the email is a phishing NEF, you can login to the court’s Electronic Case Filing System and look up associated document rather than using a link in a questionable email.
Also make sure that you are following your organization’s IT security processes and procedures for suspicious and/or malicious emails.
