FDA and NIH Award Funding for New Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco
FDA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have awarded funding for a new Center for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco (CRST). Through rapid surveillance and reporting of information, CRST will enhance CTP and the research community’s ability to understand, document, and quantify changes in the tobacco product marketplace and tobacco use patterns.

On August 2, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for “Public Health Communication Messaging about the Continuum of Risk for Tobacco Products” in the NIH Guide.
CTP’s Progress Addressing Recommendations From the Reagan-Udall Evaluation
On June 29, CTP Director Brian King published a statement summarizing the center’s progress addressing the evaluation of CTP by an independent expert panel facilitated by the Reagan-Udall Foundation (RUF). Since CTP’s response to the RUF evaluation was published in February, the center has already made significant strides in putting its plans into action.
CTP Announces Virtual Listening Session on Strategic Plan Development
In alignment with CTP’s response to the RUF evaluation, the center has initiated the development of a 5-year strategic plan to advance its mission. CTP is committed to meaningful engagement to gather feedback to ensure stakeholder thoughts and ideas help to shape the goals, outcomes, and objectives outlined in the strategic plan.
In line with that commitment, the center will host a virtual listening session on Aug. 22 to give the public an opportunity to verbally provide open public comment on the development of the 5-year strategic plan, including proposed strategic goals.
CTP Hires Its First Senior Advisor for Health Equity
Over the last several years, CTP has increasingly emphasized health equity as a critical component of its mission, both in terms of programmatic and workforce-related activities. As part of those efforts, CTP is excited to announce Dr. Charlene Le Fauve as the center’s first Senior Advisor for Health Equity.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Le Fauve to CTP as she works to support the center’s critical mission to protect people in the United States from tobacco-related disease and death.
New Resources to Help Applicants Submit PMTA Amendments
Over the last few years, CTP has received more than 26 million premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs). As part of the center’s ongoing efforts to assist applicants, and in response to questions we have received, CTP created two new resources to help applicants prepare and submit amendments to their applications:

Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Updates
The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study is a uniquely large, long-term study of tobacco use and health in the United States. A collaboration between the CTP and the NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse, the study was launched in 2011 and started the first wave of data collection in 2013.
