FDA Plans to Reduce Addictiveness of Cigarettes and Other Combusted Tobacco Products
In June, the Biden-Harris Administration published plans for future potential regulatory actions that include FDA’s plans to develop a proposed product standard that would establish a maximum nicotine level to reduce the addictiveness of cigarettes and certain other combusted tobacco products. The goal of the potential rule would be to reduce youth use, addiction and death.
On Aug. 3, Brian King, Ph.D., M.P.H., director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, shared an update on the agency’s review and enforcement of non-tobacco nicotine products.
Dr. King’s update, among other things, includes information on acceptance review of applications and new warning letters to manufacturers and retailers of non-tobacco nicotine products.
FDA remains committed to providing regular updates about premarket review progress, as well as compliance and enforcement actions related to non-tobacco nicotine products.
On Aug. 2, the comment period closed for the following proposed rules:
FDA received a very large number of comments - nearly 250,000 comments, including approximately 175,000 for the menthol cigarettes proposed rule and approximately 71,000 for the flavored cigars proposed rule. FDA appreciates the public’s active engagement in the rulemaking process and has already begun to review the comments, scientific data, expert opinions, and facts that were submitted.
FDA is committed to completing the rulemaking process as quickly as possible; however, we will need ample time to comprehensively review and analyze all of the comments. As additional information is available, we will continue to provide updates on the status of this rulemaking process.
