The Super Bowl of General Aviation
Oshkosh Tower takes on record-breaking traffic for airshow
Oshkosh week is a time where ATO expertise is on full display, and we get to see and meet the entire range of our customers at an incredible aviation event. This year we even watched our team handle a record number of single-day operations. ATO COO Tim Arel recounts his time at AirVenture and highlights the great work from air traffic professionals to take on the Super Bowl of general aviation and air traffic services.
“Some of the reasons I attend are to demonstrate support for our teams, share their successes with visiting U.S. and international dignitaries, and, most importantly, hear firsthand from our general aviation customers about their daily experiences and expectations in the national airspace system,” Arel said. “Aviation is a team sport in so many ways, and Oshkosh was a perfect demonstration of a mutual respect and admiration society.”
The Oshkosh Tower rose to the occasion as the facility broke its own record with a traffic count for the day of 3,196 operations on July 27, using just two runways in a 10-hour operational day, not including the four-hour air show or the constant, self-contained helicopter and ultralight patterns.
Arel also highlights the team behind the team in making AirVenture a success. “Our often-unsung heroes in Technical Operations at Oshkosh build unique equipment to support this event, install and maintain radios and other equipment with rapid-response times, and constantly innovate to make things more resilient and cost efficient. The Oshkosh Tech Ops Team looks and acts very much like a fire department during this event. It’s fitting that their facility sits adjacent to the tower, with vehicles ready to roll and everyone bringing an incredible sense of mission to the largest and busiest aviation event in the world.”

In January 2022, the MMAC Acquisition Division implemented a COVID-19 testing program to meet the White House’s deadline for all federal agencies. Glover proactively planned ahead in the development of the testing program, anticipated questions from industry, planned for the delivery and storage of tests, and collaborated with the Office of Chief Counsel on how to implement telehealth services for employees securely and privately. She demonstrated leadership that produced outstanding results.

Ed Marciano, electronics engineer at the William J. Hughes Technical Center, has worn a lot of hats during his FAA career, starting as a university student ‘co-op’. His 44 years at the Tech Center have afforded him unique and useful insight others value, and he offers some tips to new employees, “Set some career goals, for five and 10 years out, and make a plan with your manager to get there. Then, take it one project at a time and do the best you can. The rest will take care of itself. Be open-minded and adaptable; an (unexpected) opportunity may present itself. There are many different career positions here.”

Design Changes for Boeing 737 Max Jets
|
August 4, 2020: FAA proposed an airworthiness directive that listed requirements Boeing had to meet before the 737 Max would be allowed to fly again. The changes included installing new flight control computer software; revising the existing airplane flight manual to incorporate new and revised flightcrew procedures; installing new display system software; changing the horizontal stabilizer trim wire routing installations; completing an angle of attack sensor system test; and performing an operational readiness flight. FAA gave the public 45 days to comment. |
