Message from Acting Administrator Polly Trottenberg

Federal Aviation Administration

June 9, 2023

Dear FAA Colleagues:

I am honored that Secretary Buttigieg has asked me to serve as the FAA’s Acting Administrator alongside Katie Thomson as Deputy Administrator and look forward to working with you all.

In the past two years as DOT Deputy Secretary, I have had the privilege of collaborating closely with many of you on many key FAA priorities in safety, workforce, operations and technology. I have also been able to visit with many of you at headquarters and across the country at a number of FAA facilities, including the Command Center and the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City and see firsthand the incredible work you do every day.

I greatly look forward to working closely with more of you in my new role.

Over the past two years, I have also had the privilege of serving with Steve Dickson and Billy Nolen, both great leaders at the FAA and strong advocates for FAA’s workforce.  They made it a priority to steadfastly support you and the agency. And that will be the highest priority for me, Katie and the entire leadership team.

Thirty years in government has taught me how to make sure all of you have the support and resources you need to do your job. That is my job — to support the team as you, first and foremost, advance safety and make aviation more efficient, sustainable and equitable, and focus on US global competitiveness in the aviation sector.

I was impressed with the candid and head-on approach the agency took to address the recent cluster of runway incursions and close calls near airports and know more safety work is underway with the agency and all our stakeholders. We are starting the summer travel season from a strong position, thanks to the great work of the team over the Memorial Day weekend, but it will take all of us to keep it safe and smooth.

All of you deserve a permanent leader, and I will do everything possible to support a speedy confirmation of an Administrator for a full five-year term. Until then, I am honored to work directly with one of the most skilled and accomplished workforces in the federal government. I look forward to seeing you all soon in meetings, on the screen, and in person.

Sincerely,

Polly
