Space Is Getting a Whole Lot Closer

The proposed Boom Overture supersonic airliner is planned for a 2029 introduction.

ATO Mission Support Services is working to make every part of the world dramatically more accessible by blurring Earth’s atmosphere boundary. This plan is referred to as NAS Integration of Transiting Operations (NITRO), and it’s not your average cup of Joe. NITRO accounts for new space tourism, commercial and government space launches, reentries and supersonic flight. Through collaborative efforts across the agency and industry leaders, ATO’s strategy involves gaining a better understanding of the evolving space activity ecosystem while ensuring safety remains a priority.

Getting The Scoop on Self-Briefings

Flight Briefings

Susan Parson highlights the benefits of Aviation Flight Service Stations (AFSS), emphasizing the importance of knowing where your information comes from when searching for aviation weather data. “Like most pilots, today I enjoy the convenience of acquiring aviation-specific weather information from many sources, to include apps on my iPhone. Some of my fellow self-briefers wonder, though, how to be sure they are getting a ‘legal’ or ‘approved’ weather briefing.” Some benefits of using AFSS include comprehensive, standardized reports created by certified pilot weather experts.

Rocket Mail

First Official Mail Missile

June 8, 1959: U.S. Navy submarine USS Barbero assisted the predecessor to the United States Postal Service (USPS) in its search for faster mail transportation with the only delivery of "Missile Mail" when the Barbero fired a Regulus cruise missile – its nuclear warhead having earlier been replaced by two Post Office Department mail containers – targeted at Naval Station Mayport in Florida. Twenty-two minutes after launch, the missile struck its target. The mail consisted entirely of commemorative postal covers addressed to President Eisenhower, other government and postal officials, and so on, sent from United States Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield, who proclaimed the event to be "of historic significance to the peoples of the entire world", and predicted, "before man reaches the moon, mail will be delivered within hours from New York to California, to Britain, to India or Australia by guided missiles. We stand on the threshold of rocket mail."
