Energy Department Announces Federal Energy Management Award Winners
The Energy Department on October 4 announced the winners of the thirty-first annual Federal Energy and Water Management Awards. These awards recognize the commitment made by federal agencies to invest in efficiency measures that save taxpayer money and increase U.S. energy security. This year's award winners saved a total of 6 trillion Btu of energy, nearly 2 billion gallons of water, and almost $165 million during fiscal year 2011. The energy savings are equivalent to removing more than 100,000 cars from the road for one year, or eliminating the average annual energy use of more than 55,000 households. EISA Section 432 Guidance Available
FEMP announces the release of the Final Guidance for the Implementation and Follow-up of Identified Energy and Water Efficiency Measures in Covered Facilities (per 42 U.S.C. 8253 Subsection (f), Use of Energy and Water Efficiency Measures in Federal Buildings). This guidance pertains to the implementation and follow-up of energy and water efficiency measures identified and undertaken per Section 432 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) (42 U.S.C. 8253(f)(4) and (5)). This guidance also provides context for how these activities fit into the comprehensive approach to facility resource (energy and water) management outlined by the statute and incorporates by reference previous DOE guidance released for Section 432 of EISA and other related documents. Federal Electronics Stewardship Efforts Honored
The Energy Department received one-third of the 33 Federal Electronics Challenge Awards announced on August 13 by the EPA and the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive. Federal facilities from ten different Federal agencies were honored for activities that fostered greenhouse gas emissions reductions equivalent to taking 6,000 passenger cars off the road for a year. October 2012
National Energy Action Month
Building on the President's Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future, DOE went beyond energy awareness to spur action to save energy, water, and money for American taxpayers. To encourage this call to action, DOE requested the current Energy Awareness Month to rename to National Energy Action Month. As a result, President Barack Obama declared October Energy Action Month by Presidential Proclamation.

FEMP encourages agencies and individuals to be active in their efforts to curb energy waste in their facilities and homes. Doing so is a demonstrable way to save money and conserve existing equipment while protecting the environment. FEMP's Home Energy Checklist provides homeowners with many options that can help in energy conservation efforts. To start and promote your own campaign, check out FEMP's Create Your Own Energy Awareness Campaign web page and access different campaign materials and posters!

The Federal Energy Management Program's Commit to Efficiency Campaign
FEMP’s Commit to Efficiency campaign allows those involved in Federal purchases to commit to buy, choose, and specify products that meet or exceed FEMP-designated and ENERGY STAR efficiency requirements. Campaign registrants join a community of problem-solving individuals to help one another meet energy-efficient product procurement goals.

The goal of the campaign is to save $130 million worth of energy, or 7 trillion BTUs, in the Federal Government by December 31, 2013. A campaign resource kit is available at www.femp.energy.gov/commit and includes a list of covered product categories, guidance on writing contracts and technical specifications that yield energy-efficient products, an explanation of how minimum energy-efficiency requirements are determined, and information on where to find FEMP buying guidance, cost calculators, and training. For more information about the Commit to Efficiency campaign, email Amanda Sahl or call 202-586-1662.
