Soil Carbon Storage Workshop Report Summary Cover page

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) summary report from its March 2022 public virtual workshop, “Bioenergy’s Role in Soil Carbon Storage,” is now available.

This report includes key takeaways from the workshop’s technical sessions and presentations, which focused on soil carbon storage mechanisms, optimization strategies, agricultural and forest management practices, research and development needed to support policy, and tools for decision making. Input and insights were sourced from diverse participating stakeholders representing academia, industry, the agricultural community, municipalities, and federal agencies.

As detailed in the report, stakeholders concluded that further research and development is needed to better understand how to leverage soil carbon storage to produce lower-carbon biofuels.

Download the workshop summary report to learn how BETO is supporting soil carbon storage – a critical component for decarbonizing the nation’s transportation, agriculture, and industrial sectors. Other BETO topical workshop summaries focused on a range of bioenergy and bioeconomy topics are also available to the public.

BETO supports research, development, and demonstration to enable the sustainable use of domestic biomass and waste resources for the production of biofuels and bioproducts. BETO is part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
