City of Milwaukee Installs 100 kW Wind Turbine

The City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, completed the Port of Milwaukee Wind Turbine project, which began in November 2011. Kettle View Renewable Energy assisted with installation of the 100-kilowatt (kW) Northwind100 wind turbine, with final commissioning completed by WE Energies. The wind turbine is located next to the Port of Milwaukee's administration building.

Sky Harbor International Dedicates 5.4-MW Solar System

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and SunPower Corporation dedicated a 5.4-megawatt (MW) solar installation located atop the airport's facilities. SunPower designed and built the solar installation, and will operate and maintain the solar system through a solar services agreement with the airport. The system is expected to generate about 51 percent of the electricity demand at the airport's rental car center, two East Economy parking garages and toll plaza.

The solar project was facilitated in part by Arizona Public Service Company's (APS) Renewable Energy Incentive Program, which offers incentives to customers that help offset the costs of installing solar power. The renewable energy certificates (RECs) produced by the airport's solar system will be used by APS to help meet the utility's renewable energy standard obligation.

Beaverton (OR) Solar Program Exceeds Expectations

The City of Beaverton, Oregon, announced that its Solar Beaverton program has facilitated 258 solar installations over the past two years, exceeding the city's expectations. Following a successful 2010 pilot program, Beaverton developed Solar Beaverton in March 2011 through a partnership with Livelight Energy. The program simplifies the process of installing solar panels, allowing residents to utilize state and federal financial incentives, while expediting the solar permitting processes.

New Initiative Promotes Pennsylvania Wind Power

Pennsylvania is promoting wind energy through a new initiative known as ChoosePAWind that launched on February 21st. ChoosePAWind provides information on current retail energy suppliers offering new, Pennsylvania wind renewable energy certificates. ChoosePAWind seeks to expand the state's wind portfolio by providing information about the economic and environmental benefits of wind power. ChoosePAWind also provides businesses and consumers with information about what companies and institutions are investing in wind power throughout the state.

EPA Recognizes Green Power Leaders

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) completed its quarterly Green Power Partnership rankings, which recognizes leading organizations for their green power efforts. Wal-Mart moved up in rankings from 15th to 3rd in overall green power use, behind Intel and Kohl's, who retained their top two rankings. Wal-Mart increased its green power use from about 263 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) as of October 5, 2011 to more than 872 million kWh as of January 5, 2012. The Green Power Partnership rankings only include Wal-Mart's California and Texas facilities.

Sprint also moved up the Green Power Partner rankings, from 20th place to 13th place on the Fortune 500 Partners List, and up from 45th place to 26th place on the National Top 50 Partners List. Sprint increased its green power use from about 107 million kWh as of October 5, 2011 to 176 million kWh as of January 5, 2012. Supermarket retailer Ahold USA made the Green Power Partnership rankings for the first time, with more than 149 million kWh of annual green power use.

UniSource Energy Services Unveils Solar Program

UniSource Energy Services is now offering a solar green power program, Bright Arizona Community Solar. The program allows electric customers to purchase solar power from two recently completed solar generating systems in Mohave County, Arizona, with a combined capacity of 1.7 megawatts.

Beginning in February 2012, customers may purchase the solar generated power in 150 kilowatt-hour blocks at a rate of $3 per block. There are 1,720 blocks of generated solar power available from the two new solar systems and customers may purchase blocks equivalent to up to 100 percent of their electricity needs.

Purchases are exempt from UniSource's Renewable Energy Standard Tariff and the Purchased Power and Fuel Adjustment Clause, surcharges that are adjusted annually.

InterContinental Miami Purchasing 100% Wind Power

InterContinental Miami hotel has partnered with Greenlight Energy to purchase 15.4 million kilowatt-hours of wind renewable energy certificates (RECs), equivalent to 100 percent of the hotel's electricity needs for 2012. InterContinental Miami has been added to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 100 percent Green Power Purchasers List, as well as the EPA's Green Power Leadership Club for its purchase.

Eastern Univ. Signs 7-Year Agreement for 100% Green Power

Eastern University (PA) has partnered with Community Energy to extend its 100 percent green power commitment for seven years. The university has purchased 100 percent of its electricity from wind renewable energy certificates (RECs) since 2006 and is now committed to purchase 100 percent green power through at least 2018. Community Energy will supply a portion of the university's renewable energy generation through solar RECs from a 6-megawatt solar facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which the marketer plans to build in 2012.

Greenerprinter & Giovanni Food Co. Join Green-e Marketplace

Greenerprinter and Giovanni Food Company have joined Green-e Marketplace by purchasing Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates to meet their electricity demands. By participating in Green-e Marketplace, both companies can now display the Green-e logo to inform customers of their purchases of renewable energy.

Greenerprinter purchased 304 megawatt-hours (MWh) of Green-e Energy certified wind power, enough to meet 100 percent of the annual electricity needs for its U.S. operations, including its headquarters and printing facility. The purchase is supplied by Sterling Planet. Giovanni Food Company's purchase of 1,440 MWh of Green-e Energy certified wind is supplied by Constellation Energy. Giovanni's green power purchase matches 60 percent of the electricity needs at its manufacturing facility.
