Vacancy Announcement for Emerging Technologies Program Manager in DOE’s Building Technologies Office

DOE/EERE’s Building Technologies Office is pleased to announce our intent to fill an Emerging Technologies (ET) Program Manager position (Physical Scientist, GS-1301-15) in Washington D.C.
This very important position manages the $140 million per year (as of fiscal 2021) ET program, which supports R&D, testing and validation, and integration of affordable, energy-saving (and/or demand-flexible) technologies, systems, strategies, analytical tools, and information services. ET’s R&D projects help industry, national laboratories, other researchers, governments, energy end users, and others to commercialize and/or implement these at scale, thus reducing energy waste in both new and existing residential and commercial buildings and helping them decarbonize. Widespread introduction and adoption of new and existing technologies for buildings-related energy efficiency and demand flexibility could reduce energy use in homes and commercial buildings by 50%, reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions, better integrate renewable energy, and improve the comfort and productivity of building occupants.
The ET program supports development of a broad array of to-be-cost-effective technologies, systems and approaches that lower and otherwise optimize building energy consumption, focusing on HVAC, water heating, opaque building envelope, windows, solid state lighting, sensors and controls, appliances, and grid-interactive efficient buildings. The ET program is comprised of an in-house federal staff, and an extensive network of hundreds of National Lab, university and other PIs, contractors and R&D performers.
DOE has Direct Hire Authority to fill Scientific, Technical, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) positions at the GS-15 grade levels for Physical Scientists. This authority allows us to hire more quickly than the traditional government hiring process. In using this authority, DOE still abides by the Merit System Principles and all Federal and DOE regulations for hiring.
