The Better Buildings Summit is in One Month!
The 2018 Better Buildings Summit is just a month away: August 21-23 in Cleveland, Ohio. This year, we’re partnering with the Department of Energy’s Energy Exchange, the nation’s premier conference on energy management in federal facilities.
The Better Buildings Summit portion of the event will be primarily on the 22nd and 23rd with some pre- and post-event workshops taking place on the 21st and 24th. This year, attendees can look forward to a dedicated industrial track, along with many cross-cutting sessions, an Ask-an-Expert booth with industrial topics, and several exclusive networking opportunities. The afternoon of Wednesday, August 22, will also feature a recognition ceremony for goal achieving-partners, winners of this year's Better Practice and Better Project awards (please see below for the full list), 50001 Ready partners, and Superior Energy Performance-certified facilities. The Wednesday event will include a presentation by the Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Office, Rob Ivester, along with an opportunity to provide feedback and input on DOE's work. Please see attached for a detailed, industrial-focused agenda.
This year's Summit also features tours on the morning of Wednesday, August 22, of the nearby manufacturing facilities of three partners: ArcelorMittal, Ford Motor Company, and PPG. Participants will get a firsthand look at these partners' manufacturing processes and innovative energy efficiency practices. Congratulations to 2018 Better Practice and Better Project Awardees
Better Plants is excited to announce the winners of 2018 Better Practice and Better Project awards, chosen from a slate of very strong submissions. Better Practice awards recognize innovative and industry-leading accomplishments in implementing and promoting practices, principles and procedures of energy management. To be eligible, practices must be shown to drive organizational/cultural changes that facilitate improvements in energy performance.

All applications are eligible for conversion to implementation models and showcase projects for display on the Solution Center.
In-Plant Trainings Scheduled for Fall 2018
In-Plant Trainings (INPLTs) for the fall of 2018 are being scheduled! INPLTs are workshops led by Better Plants experts that train participants on how to identify, implement, and replicate energy-saving projects and conduct assessments on industrial systems.
A select number of the below trainings will be open to outside participation from other Better Plants partners and prospects. If you are interested in attending an INPLT, please contact your Technical Account Manager. If you are interested in hosting an INPLT in the future, the next application period will open later this year.

TE Connectivity and Eastman Chemical's Sharon Nolen Celebrated at IETC
DOE sponsored the Industrial Energy Technology Conference, which was held in New Orleans from June 12-14. IETC helps educate the industrial energy community regarding industrial innovations, energy use and waste reduction programs, and the latest in various state and federal programs affecting industry. TE Connectivity, a Better Plants Challenge partner, and Sharon Nolen of Eastman Chemical, also a Better Plants Challenge partner, were honored at a rewards luncheon for their energy efficiency leadership; they received the 2018 IETC Energy Awards for a company and individual, respectively. Congratulations to both!
This year's conference also featured eleven technical sessions and panel discussions and over forty individual presentations, including several by Better Plants TAMs. Valri Lightner, the acting Deputy Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO), gave a keynote address in which she emphasized the partnership aspect of AMO’s programs, particularly the technical assistance programs. Ms. Lightner also recognized TE Connectivity and Ms. Sharon Nolen in her remarks.
Join Better Plants at the World Energy Engineering Congress in October
Better Plants is a sponsor of the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC), the largest energy conference and technology expo in the U.S. for industrial energy users. This year, WEEC will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, from October 17 to 19, and Better Plants is organizing four industrial-focused sessions:

MEET THE PARTNERS
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Imerys Carbonates North America Join Better Plants
Two energy efficiency leaders have joined the Better Plants family: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Imerys Carbonates North America. FCA is the world's eighth largest automaker, including brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, and Ram Trucks; Imerys Carbonates North America is the provider of over 250 calcium carbonate and multi-mineral customer solutions. Both new partners have pledged to reduce energy intensity in their U.S. manufacturing operations by 25% within ten years.
Martin Guitar's Good Work Highlighted in DOE Leadership Visit
Daniel Simmons, the nominee for Assistant Secretary in DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, toured C.F. Martin & Co.’s (Martin Guitar) Nazareth, Pennsylvania, flagship plant in June 2018 to promote the partner’s energy efficiency leadership. Simmons and other DOE officials toured the partner's central hot/chilled water plant along with the manufacturing facility and museum.
Through an investment of more than $8 million in a HVAC overhaul, Martin Guitar has cut electricity use by 46 percent and natural gas consumption by 20 percent since November 2016. These savings translate into a 27 percent improvement in energy intensity at the plant and more than $500,000 in reduced annual energy costs. The partner is a goal achiever and winner of a 2017 Better Project award. You can read some of the local news coverage of the visit here:

New Technology Focus Webpages Launched
Better Plants content in the online Solution Center has been reorganized around 13 technology focus areas:
These individual technology focus area-webpages are meant to be one-stop shops for partners looking for actionable solutions for energy efficiency challenges involving specific systems. Each page contains links to helpful resources, such as relevant Better Plants showcase projects and implementation models, DOE tipsheets and publications, software tools, webinars, and contact information for a subject matter expert. Financing Navigator 2.0 Demo-Webinar Scheduled for July 26
The Better Buildings Financing Navigator is an online tool developed by the Department of Energy that helps public and private sector organizations find financing solutions for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The tool helps users understand the array of financing solutions for energy projects that are available in the market and easily explore which option may be best for them.
The recently released Version 2.0 features renewable energy financing options, a smart database of financing providers that can be searched and filtered, a compendium of sector-specific and location-specific financing resources, updated market data and insights, a fresh modern design, and more. Learn more about the tool and its industrial applications by registering for a demonstration webinar taking place on Thursday, July 26, from 1:00-2:00 pm EST.
EnPI Tool Overview-Webinar Posted Online
The Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI) V5.0 is a regression analysis based tool developed by DOE to help plant and corporate managers establish a normalized baseline of energy consumption, track annual progress of intensity improvements, energy savings, Superior Energy Performance (SEP) EnPIs, and other EnPIs that account for variations due to weather, production, and other variables. The tool is designed to accommodate multiple users including Better Buildings, Better Plants Program and Challenge Partners, 50001 Ready and SEP participants, other manufacturing firms, and even non-manufacturing facilities such as data centers. A webinar in which Oak Ridge National Lab's Sachin Nimbalkar walks through how to use the EnPI tool has been posted online, along with a transcript and Sachin's presentation slides. Check it out!
