Joint IES & NSF Funding Opportunity for National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes The Department’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has partnered with the National Science Foundation (NSF) in a new funding initiative to encourage scientists to focus on research and development of AI-driven innovations to radically improve human learning and education. IES is providing partial funding for NSF’s National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institutes - Accelerating Research, Transforming Society, and Growing the American Workforce (Solicitation 22-502) under Theme 6: AI-Augmented Learning to Expand Education Opportunities and Improve Outcomes. This theme has two tracks associated with the two IES Research Centers:
- Theme 6 Track A: AI-Driven Digital Platforms to Expand and Accelerate STEM Learning in PreK-12 Settings.
- Theme 6 Track B: AI-Augmented Learning for Individuals with Disabilities.

Advancing Equity in Science & Technology Ideation Challenge: Submit Your Ideas Today On October 20, 2021, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced “The Time is Now: Advancing Equity in Science and Technology Ideation Challenge.” OSTP Director Eric Lander is asking the American public to share their insights on a central question, “How can we guarantee all Americans can fully participate in, and contribute to, science and technology?” The #OSTPTimeIsNow #SciEquityChallenge gives all people, from students and skilled technical workers, scientists, and industry innovators, to equity advocates, creatives, education leaders, and the people who value and use science and technology in their everyday lives, the opportunity to help answer this question by directly submitting their own thoughts, ideas, or examples of existing or promising actions that expand equity and inclusion. Submissions are being accepted through November 19, 2021.
Apply for EPA Environmental Education (EE) Grant The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks grant applications from eligible applicants to support environmental education projects that promote environmental awareness and stewardship and help provide people with the skills to take responsible actions to protect the environment. This grant program provides financial support for projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques. If you are interested in applying, consider joining EE grant program staff on a webinar and discuss how to write a competitive application and address commonly asked questions related to the 2021 EE Local Grants Request for Applications (RFA). Airport Design Challenge The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is thrilled to be hosting another round of the very popular Airport Design Challenge, where students are encouraged to form teams and recreate a real airport in the Minecraft virtual platform. Students from K-12 can participate using the free version of Minecraft and all of them will get the chance to not only use Minecraft in a unique way, but also learn lessons about aviation and airports along the way. Student enrollment opens November 1, 2021.

Design Moon-Digging Robots with Lunabotics NASA and Future Engineers are challenging young innovators to help design a new robot concept for an excavation mission on the Moon. The Lunabotics Junior Contest is open to K-12 students in U.S. public and private schools, as well as home-schoolers. Entries are due January 25, 2022.
