FTA is providing a reminder to all State Safety Oversight Agencies (SSOAs) and Rail Transit Agencies (RTAs) regarding the May 26, 2026, reporting deadline for recommendations established in Safety Advisory 25-1: Reducing Rail Trespassing and Suicide Events.
By this date, SSOAs should upload any completed safety risk assessments, associated mitigation plans, and any additional relevant documentation from their RTAs to the State Safety Oversight Reporting (SSOR) system.
In its safety advisory, FTA recommends that SSOAs direct RTAs to:
- Review and analyze safety performance data to identify hazards related to rail trespassing and suicide events;
- Perform safety risk assessments;
- Identify safety risk mitigations as necessary to reduce safety risks; and
- Monitor implemented mitigations for effectiveness.
While these are recommended actions, reporting this data is essential to supporting the industry-wide effort to reduce rail-related injuries and fatalities. Visit FTA’s website for more details, expanded data analysis, and a list of resources to support transit agency efforts.
