Back in October 2025, FTA alerted transit agencies that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued two recalls of certain New Flyer of America, Inc. (New Flyer) and Motor Coach Industries (MCI) vehicles. NHTSA’s recalls are still active and transit agencies should be aware of the fire risk warning for certain New Flyer and MCI vehicles. The high voltage battery may experience a short circuit within the battery module when charging to near or full capacity, leading to fire.
NHTSA advises owners to:
- Park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.
- Avoid charging vehicles above 75 percent capacity.
The recalls affect:
- New Flyer – 655 transit buses for models and years:
- XE35 (2019, 2021-2025)
- XE40 (2021-2025)
- XE60 (2021-2025)
- MCI – 12 coaches for models and years:
- D45CRTE (2024)
- D45CRTELE (2024)
- J4500E (2025)
Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed by October 3, 2025. Owners should contact New Flyer customer service at 1-800-241-2947 and MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947. For more information, owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to nhtsa.gov.
