Read FTA’s Dear Colleague Letter: FTA issued a Dear Colleague letter regarding the TAM plan update deadline of October 1, 2022. The letter reminds chief executive officers and general managers of their responsibility to ensure TAM plans were developed to comply with the original rule are updated accordingly.
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law legislation authorizes up to $108 billion to support federal public transportation programs, the largest federal investment in public transportation in the nation’s history. The legislation will advance public transportation in America’s communities through four key priorities: safety, modernization, climate, and equity. This FTA site maintains information and resources on the associated programs.
Submit your agency’s TAM Plans: TAM Plan examples are now available on the APTA website. Submit your TAM Plan to APTA to be featured on the site.

Save the Date for the April 28, 2022, Webinar: FTA will host a webinar 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET Thursday, April 28, 2022 to review how to use the newest version of TAMPLATE to create a TAM plan. The webinar will feature a tutorial from Tamalynn Kennedy, TAM Program Manager for FTA as well as a peer presentation from Kyle Laird, Mobility and Systems Planner for Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART).
The Using TAMPLATE to Create a TAM Plan webinar is part of a larger webinar series that FTA hosts to address important topics relating to TAM. TAM is an essential practice for providing safer, more reliable transit service nationwide while helping lower operating costs.

TAMPLATE User Manual: The TAMPLATE User Manual is a companion document that walks you through each section of TAMPLATE to generate a TAM plan. In general, personnel who are knowledgeable about your organization’s assets and responsible for asset management processes (e.g., procurement, maintenance, compliance, etc.) are best positioned to complete a TAM plan.
Updated Group Plan Sponsor Workbook: The FTA Group Plan Sponsor Workbook provides a consolidated list of activities, considerations, suggestions, and best practices related to group TAM plans to assist Group Plan sponsors in developing Group Plans. FTA has recently updated the workbook in advance of the October 2022 TAM Plan update.

TRB’s 13th National Conference on Transportation Asset Management Circular: TRB released the Conference Circular summarizing the conference proceedings in February 2022. The conference featured a variety of topics highlighting best practices in areas such as risk management, life cycle planning, and Transportation Asset Management Plan development.
Sustainability and Urban Design Standards: APTA’s Sustainability and Urban Design Standards. These documents apply to all transit modes, stations, and facilities. Topics include best practices for sustainable urban design and issues associated with design, such as complete streets, livability, partnership and more.
24th Edition of the Conditions and Performance Report: The U.S. DOT published the 24th Edition of the Conditions and Performance Report, which found that as of 2016, an estimated 21% of buses and 10% of rail transit assets are in marginal or poor condition, with a backlog of $105.1 billion in deferred maintenance and replacement.
More electric buses join transit fleets as costs and technology improve: Since 2018, battery-electric transit buses (BEBs) currently on order or operating in the US grew 112 percent. Smart Cities took a deep dive to evaluate how transit agencies are identifying efficient methods to incorporate more electric buses into their fleets.
$41 million Napa Valley public transit maintenance facility construction begins: The North Bay Business Journal highlighted the construction of a $41 million facility. The new facility will help the Napa Valley Transit agency accommodate an expanded fleet of up to 80 transit vehicles.
Philadelphia to put first automated shuttle into service: This summer, the City of Philadelphia intends to implement an Autonomous Vehicle (AV) shuttle service, which will service passengers within the Philadelphia Navy Yard and to a nearby Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) station.

CTA plans for all-electric bus fleet by 2040: The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has announced the details of a multi-year analysis for the full electrification of the current CTA bus fleet. The study will serve as the first-ever roadmap for full-electrification of the bus fleet, facilities and supporting infrastructure by the year 2040.

‘A no-brainer’: Merrimack Valley RTA makes all buses free to ride for two years: The drop of fares, announced in December, will be effective across all MVRTA local bus lines. Transit authorities hope it will reattract riders lost during the COVID pandemic and open the buses to people struggling to afford rides.
