New Plans to Evaluate Mobility on Demand Sandbox Demonstration Projects

In 2016, FTA awarded $8 million through its Mobility on Demand (MOD) Sandbox Program to support 11 transit agencies and communities as they integrate new mobility tools like smart phone apps, bike- and car-sharing, and demand-responsive bus and van services. MOD projects help make transportation systems more efficient and accessible, particularly for people who lack access to a car. Through creative business models, the MOD Sandbox Program explores the potential of integrating public and private transportation choices and how transit providers, local governments, technology companies and others might collaborate to demonstrate solutions in real-world settings.

The National Transportation Library has released plans for how independent researchers will evaluate MOD Sandbox projects, including:

Researchers will assess each of the 11 MOD Sandbox Program projects based on performance measures provided by the project partners, as well as an independent evaluation. Each report will address the project evaluation approach and process and data collection and analyses.
