TMIP Webinar: Assembling a Metropolitan Transportation Model, from MSA to TAZ - Wednesday, August 10, 2016 from 2pm-3:30pm Eastern
Please join us for our next webinar: Assembling a Metropolitan Transportation Model, from MSA to TAZ by Jonathan Lupton (Metroplan, Little Rock, AR). This webinar is likely to fill up, so please share a connection whenever possible. We are limited to 100 participants in the web room. We will send out a copy of the slides the morning of the presentation so that those who cannot get into the web room can follow along on the teleconference line. Presentation Description
This presentation will describe the data and methods used by Metroplan, the Little Rock regional MPO, to develop transportation models since the middle 1990's. Metroplan uses spreadsheet templates to project population and employment at the regional level, then methodically refines it downward into TAZ-level inputs for population, household size, vehicles available, employment by industry, and other characteristics. The data sets available have grown exponentially in recent years, while software, data-processing and presentation capabilities have also improved, yet good-quality human judgment remains decisive. Transportation models are often developed in isolation, yet offices in different parts of the country can benefit by sharing their techniques. This presentation will conclude with an open-ended discussion on ways different agencies can share ideas and skills to meet the modeling challenge. PresenterJonathan Lupton, AICP, is a research planner at Metroplan, the MPO for the Little Rock metro area. He balances data-gathering and projections with maintaining the Data Center of the Metroplan website and writing the twice-yearly Metrotrends newsletters that track the latest demographic, housing, and economic trends in the Little Rock region. He has produced the socioeconomic component of four major transportation plans during his 23 years working with Metroplan. He was a beta-tester for TELUM, a land-use modeling program, and presented on this subject at the TRB Methods conference in Big Sky, Montana, in September 2012. Johnathan graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan with a BA degree in history in 1982. He received a Master's degree in Geography from the University of Chicago in 1987 and a Master's in Community and Regional Planning at the University of Texas at Austin in 1990. Meeting Information
