The deadline is drawing near for submitting nominations for the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) 2023 Build a Better Mousetrap National Recognition Program for Transportation Innovation.
In 2022, we saw 67 nominations from all over the country that improved safety, saved money, decreased time, and improved efficiency.
The last day to submit your nomination is June 9th. FHWA is looking for innovations that provide agency and community benefit, and has applicability for other agencies to implement.

- LTAP/TTAP Centers submit nominations to FHWA. Submissions may be filed for more than one category.
- Nominations for the Build a Better Mousetrap competition are sent to CLAS@DOT.GOV from LTAP/TTAP centers.

These are the categories:
Innovative Project
Any fix that works for one or more stages of the 'project' life cycle. It is expected that this project will bring innovative concepts and be locally relevant, innovative, and creative in its approach.
Bold Steps
Any high-risk endeavor with local relevance that has an unique approach to reducing risk while simultaneously increasing return.
Smart Transportation
One that is "Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound," and hence affects a particular mode of transportation and has a substantial local impact with the goal of improving efficiency.
Pioneer
A locally relevant product or tool that is pioneering a homegrown solution to a maintenance issue.
