Safety innovations have been a cornerstone of the Every Day Counts (EDC) program since 2011, resulting in their rapid deployment and institutionalization. The upcoming EDC Safety Summit Series will build on that momentum.
The Featured EDC initiatives are:
There will be 3 roadway departure initiatives covered: FoRRRwD, HFST, & SafetyEdgeSM. The summit will include conversations with practitioners as well as breakouts sessions for participants to ask questions.
Focus on Reducing Rural Roadway Departures (FoRRRwD)
 |
|
The FoRRRwD initiative has 4 pillars and we will be exploring each of them during the summit.
All Public Roads - Ed Spilker from Washington State DOT and Aaron Simmons from Douglas County Washington
Systemic Approach - Derek Leuer and Girman Feyissa from Minnesota DOT and Victor Lund from St. Louis County, Minnesota
Safety Action Plans - Robert Peterson from Caltrans and Tom Matteson from Humboldt County, California
Proven Countermeasures - These conversations will only cover the SafetyEdgeSM and HFST, which were previous EDC initiatives.

High Friction Surface Treatments (HFST)
HFST was an EDC2 innovation that has been proven to be very effective for reducing crashes at curves - an 83% reduction in wet road crashes!
The conversation will feature Mike Vaughn from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
|
SafetyEdgeSM
The SafetyEdgeSM was the first safety innovation included in EDC round 1. The SafetyEdgeSM has been shown to reduce 21% of Run-off-Road crashes and 19% of Head-On crashes.
The conversations will include Shawn Troy from North Carolina DOT, Todd Kinney from Clinton County, Iowa, and Derek Snead and Todd Postel from Jones County, Iowa.
