Work Zone Data Initiative

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently kicked off an effort to develop and promote practices for generating work zone activity data (WZAD) databases. The outcome of this task is to elevate the national state-of-the-practice regarding WZAD management.

FHWA will be engaging stakeholders across the country in the next few months to support: The identification of user needs, the development of a common WZAD taxonomy, the creation of a concept of operations for managing WZAD, and a variety of outreach tasks and pilot testing to provide the most useful resources to agencies utilizing WZAD.

The Work Zone Data Initiative webpage is coming soon.

Work Zone Mobility Case Study: Boosting Work Zone Performance through Data

Under the FHWA Work Zone Safety Grant Program, Wayne State University is investigating the use of probe vehicle data to assess work zone mobility and performance. This study will inform the development of a national recommended practice for using modern data sources to boost work zone performance.

The study is looking for examples of integrating mobility data (such as HERE, INRIX, TomTom, or non-proprietary datasets) in dashboard applications and after-action reviews to improve traffic flow in work zones.

➜ If you have examples to share, please contact Steve Remias.
