U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

In the News

Message from Rear Admiral Helis

With the U.S. Coast Guard licensing exams now completed, we are all turning our attention to graduation for the Class of 2013. I am especially proud of these men and women who will be stepping up and assuming leadership roles in a wide range of callings. The majority of our graduates will sail as Merchant Marine officers and concurrently serve in the Navy Reserve.  These newly-licensed mariners will sail on deep sea, offshore support, inland waterway, and towing vessels. Forty nine of our midshipmen will serve on Active Duty in the Armed Forces.   These new maritime leaders represent 37 states in the U.S. and four foreign countries including the Republic of Panama, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore. We are very honored Gen. William M. Fraser III, Commander, U.S. Transportation Command is this year's commencement speaker. He epitomizes the ideals of our Academy and is an outstanding role-model for our graduates who are about to embark on a lifetime of service. And as they do so, I’d like to give my appreciation to the entire Academic community for their contribution in helping make these new leaders who they are today. You can watch live coverage of graduation 2013 at www.usmma.edu. I encourage you to continue to provide feedback and share your ideas to keep the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy the leader in maritime education.
