Neurodiversity in the Workplace
April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day, part of Autism Awareness Month. To help employers learn the benefits of a neurodiverse workforce, the Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion created "Neurodiversity in the Workplace." This online resource addresses the benefit of neurodiversity for employers and employees, common accommodations for employees with autism and other neurocognitive differences, and related hiring initiatives and partnerships implemented by companies.
Accommodations and COVID-19
The Job Accommodation Network webinar on "Americans with Disabilities Act and Accommodation Lessons Learned: COVID-19 Edition" is available in the archive. The webinar discusses the adjustments employers made to keep employees, including individuals with disabilities, working during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also provides practical strategies for engaging in the interactive accommodation process to address evolving workforce needs.
PEAT Podcast
The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology posted a new episode of its Future of Work podcast series on "Disability-Led Innovation in Future Workplaces." In the podcast, business strategist Jonathan Kaufman discusses how disability offers an innovative framework for the future of work to help businesses gain a competitive advantage.
Web Accessibility in the States
In collaboration with the State Exchange on Employment & Disability, the Council of State Governments published a blog on "Web Accessibility in the States" to highlight web accessibility best practices. The blog features examples of states that have passed legislation on accessibility standards for state websites to ensure information and resources, including COVID-19 supports and services, are accessible to everyone.
Disability-Inclusive COVID-19 Workforce Recovery Strategies
The National Governors Association published a memo on "Governors' Role in Promoting Disability Employment in COVID-19 Recovery Strategies." It outlines the impact of COVID-19 on the employment of people with disabilities and highlights actions states can take to ensure people with disabilities are included in workforce recovery efforts. The memo was developed in collaboration with the State Exchange on Employment & Disability.
Inclusive State Telework Policies and Programs
Through its collaboration with the State Exchange on Employment & Disability, the Council of State Governments created resources to guide states in developing and implementing inclusive telework policies and programs. The "Disability-Inclusive Telework for States" resources include a report with existing state and federal laws on inclusive telework, a microsite featuring interactive maps with state policy examples, and a webinar highlighting state strategies for disability inclusion in government telework programs. CSG’s blog on "New Resources Guide States toward More Inclusive Telework" provides an overview of these resources and offers suggestions for state policymakers.
