The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in criminal justice holds potential to promote public safety, but it’s important to ensure its equitable use and safeguard civil rights.

Toward that end, we’re seeking public comment on section 7.1(b) Executive Order 14110, “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence,” to inform a report that addresses the use of AI in the CJ system.

The deadline to submit your comments is May 28 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Research shows that female officers use less physical force, foster more cooperation and community trust, and engage more frequently in de-escalation practices. Yet they currently only represent about 12% of officers and 3% of leadership roles in the field.

I recently spoke at the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives 28th Annual Conference about the need for more women in law enforcement and discussed NIJ-funded research on best strategies to recruit and retain female officers.

NIJ’s latest podcast release features the fascinating research of one our own graduate research fellows! Dr. Shelby Khandasammy shares insights into her innovative research on organic gunshot residue analysis that’s helping investigators find evidence in crime scenes.

I’m incredibly proud to see the work coming from NIJ-funded doctoral dissertations help to modernize practices in the field.
