Advancing Science: The Official Newsletter of the NIJ Director

Welcome to the latest issue of Advancing Science, the official newsletter from my desk as NIJ Director, where I share the latest thoughts and happenings around NIJ. Please consider subscribing to future issues if you haven’t already done so.

Director's Newsletter Listening Sessions

At NIJ, we spend considerable effort and resources ensuring that the research we sponsor is accessible to policymakers, practitioners, and advocacy communities to inform improvements in public safety, equitable access to justice, and effective justice systems policies and practices.

In pursuit of that goal, I recently launched a series of listening sessions with research community stakeholders to learn about their work and how NIJ can help meet their needs. These conversations yielded important insights for us at NIJ and sparked positive new connections among participants. I’m eager to continue direct engagement with research entities, criminal justice practitioner associations, and advocacy groups to learn how we can strengthen the quality and impact of NIJ-sponsored research.

Director's Newsletter FY22 Awards

I’m pleased to share that all of our 2022 awards have been made! During this period, we issued 26 solicitations that resulted in 78 competitive awards accounting for just over $58M in funding. These awards span research areas including juvenile justice, school safety, policing, forensics, domestic radicalization, racial disparities in the justice system, crime prevention, violence against women, gun violence, and hate crimes.

I am tremendously thankful to our amazing staff who made these awards possible. Now onto fiscal year 2023!

Director's Newsletter FY23 Solicitations

Speaking of 2023, one thing I’ve heard from prospective grantees is that you need a better heads up on what funding opportunities are on the horizon. While we can’t list all of the solicitation specifics just yet, NIJ is especially interested in supporting research in several areas that you can read about on our website. It’s not too early to start thinking about research questions, partnerships, and data sharing agreements!

Stay tuned for the official solicitation announcements in the coming months – you can subscribe to receive an email whenever we release a funding opportunity.
