BJS TO RELEASE REPORTS ON JAIL INMATES; COVID-19

WASHINGTON— The U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics will issue a press release and reports, Impact of COVID-19 on the Local Jail Population, January-June 2020, and Jail Inmates in 2019. These reports are EMBARGOED UNTIL WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2021, 10 A.M. ET.

The report Impact of COVID-19 on the Local Jail Population, January-June 2020, describes the impact of COVID-19 on the local jail population during the 6-month period from January to June 2020, including the impact on the release of jail inmates, admissions to jails, jail capacity and incarceration rates. It includes data on COVID-19 tests and data on confirmed and suspected deaths due to COVID-19 among jail inmates and staff.

BJS also released Jail Inmates in 2019. This report is the 33rd in a series that began in 1982. It provides statistics based on BJS’s Annual Survey of Jails and Census of Jails. It describes the number of inmates held in local jails, jail incarceration rates, demographic characteristics of jail inmates, the number of admissions to jail, jail capacity, inmate turnover rates and staff employed in local jails.
