National Institute of Justice: Strengthen Science. Advance Justice.

NIJ has updated several solicitations (listed below) with instructions for submitting environmental documentation, commonly known as the “NEPA checklist,” with your grant application, if the checklist is required.

NIJ is making this checklist and associated instructions available to you in an effort to streamline the application process and to avoid post-award withholding conditions, related to NEPA, where possible.

Please carefully review the instructions and submit the completed and signed checklist, if appropriate, with your grant application.

Applicants that are not able to submit a completed checklist by the time of application submission will not be penalized, but if selected for award, could have funding withholding conditions place on their awards until all NEPA documentation is completed and reviewed by NIJ.

Solicitations impacted include:
  • Research and Development in Forensic Science for Criminal Justice Purposes
  • Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program, Formula
  • Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program, Competitive
  • Ponstconviction Testing of DNA Evidence
  • Research and Evaluation for the Testing and Interpretation of Physical Evidence in Publicly Funded Forensic Laboratories
  • Forensic DNA Laboratory Efficiency Improvement and Capacity Enhancement Program
