I’ve always wanted to be a career woman. Then, I got married in college to an ROTC cadet and the last 10 years have been a military whirlwind. Two kids and five duty stations later, I’m finally ready! The problem is my resume. I have been busy these last ten years. I’ve volunteered, taken a couple of jobs and been a contract writer. I thought that I had a lot of great things to add to my resume that showed I hadn’t completely neglected my dream of being a career woman. However, for the last 11 months, I’ve been applying for jobs and have been turned down repeatedly.

We hear all about “turnover” leading up to a PCS, and we hear all about it on the other side as we’re settling in. In a perfect world, our service members spend one-on-one time equipping their replacement with all the official (and unofficial) ins and outs of the job. What is the battle rhythm? Where are the documents stored? What are the requirements? The busy seasons? The weekly, monthly and annual expectations? What does a typical workday look like? Who is an ally in the unit if a random question pops up? It’s a brain dump from one uniform to another, and it ensures continuity.

Transitions in Military Life Affect the Whole Family

When a service member prepares to go on a deployment, do a PCS move, or transition out of the military, they are required to go through several levels of discussions and counseling to make sure they are prepared. It makes sense to give the service member opportunities to discuss paperwork, ask questions, create a timeline of necessary tasks, and gain awareness of the various resources and organizations in place to support them through a major transition.

My name is Jennifer Walker and I work with the Defense Department, in the Office of Personnel and Readiness. I am a Marine Corps veteran and a proud mom of three. I am on a team of awesome individuals who are helping to roll out something called the Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DCFSA) Benefit.
