The Compass 

 

The Compass is a weekly digital publication detailing events occurring in the Italian community, as well as base-sponsored trips to various destinations throughout Europe.

 

Local advisory, Aug. 6-9

The Blessed Peacemakers, will conduct several demonstrations Aug. 6-9 in the local area. The first demonstration on Aug. 6 will take place in the Pordenone square at 8:30 p.m. On Aug. 7 and 8, demonstrators will cycle through northeast and southeast Pordenone. On Aug.  9, demonstrators will cycle to Aviano from Vallenoncello and hold a ceremony outside the gates. Although these protests are historically peaceful, Team Aviano members are encouraged to avoid these areas based upon the potential number of participants.

 

General advisory

Team Aviano members are reminded to remain vigilant while traveling in the local area. While travelling off base, personnel should limit uniform wear as required by 31st Fighter Wing policy and avoid locations where uniform wear is inappropriate. Be mindful of any suspicious activity and report all information to security forces at 632-7200 or 632-3937 (EYES).  

 

Festival Brocante in Frisasco, Aug. 2

A circus festival begins at 9:30 p.m. at Via Valdestali, 4 Frisanco. The event features aerialists and acrobatics performing different routines. There will be live music beginning at 11:30 p.m. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/BrocanteFestival.

 

Giais on the Rock in Giais di Aviano, Aug. 2-3

A rock music event begins at 7 p.m. on the soccer fields in Giais. The free event features rock bands from the local area. A variety of food and beverage stands will be available. For more information, visit http://www.giais.it/festa_rock.htm.

 

Wild berry festival in Forni Avoltri, Aug. 2-4

A wild berry festival begins at 10 a.m. in the Forni Avoltri square. The event features food and beverages, live music, local crafts and wild berry stands. Lory Days in Claut, Aug. 2-4

An all-day festival takes place behind the Claut town gym. The event features a soccer tournament Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. and a bike ride Aug. 4 beginning at 9:30 a.m. For more information, visit http://www.turismofvg.it/evento/108346.

 

Landre tunnels in Cimolais, Aug. 4

Antique market, fair in Barcis, Aug. 4

An all-day fair takes place in the streets of Barcis. The event features food, beverages, crafts, antiques and games. A firework show will take place in the evening. For more information, visit http://www.turismofvg.it/evento/103725.

 

Alpini relay in Piancavallo, Aug. 4

A 24-kilometer non-competitive relay runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Collalto in front of the Alpini monument. The event costs 25 euro per three-person team. Participants must be at least 18 years old and register by Aug. 1. T-shirts and lunch are provided at 12:30 p.m. For more information, call 632-5710.

 

Color Run in Milano Marittima, Aug. 13

Folklore festival in Aviano, Aug. 15

A folklore festival takes place from 10 a.m. to midnight in the Aviano square. The event features a variety of dance groups performing at 11:30 a.m., noon and 9 p.m. A fireworks display will close out the ceremony at midnight. For more information, contact edward.andrews.2@us.af.mil.

 

Sagra ell’Assunta in Porcia, Aug. 16

Street market in Sistiana, every Friday until Aug. 30

Archeological museum in Torre

An archeological museum located near Torre Castle features artifacts from the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze ages. The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 3 to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets cost 3 euro. Adventure park in Piancavallo

Butterflies in Bordano

A live butterfly exhibit is open year round at Casa delle Farfalle. The exhibit features habitats from the Amazon, Asia and Africa, a butterfly greenhouse and a native butterfly outdoor garden. Green caves, museum in Clauzetto

The Pradis Caves and Museum are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in

Pradis di Sotto. The cave features the statue "Madonnina delle Grotte" and a

Guided dam tour in Erto e Casso

Forty-minute guided tours of Vajont Dam are held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to show how a catastrophic landslide from the dam destroyed five towns in 1963. The tour costs 5 euro. For more information, visit http://www.parks.it/parco.dolomiti.friulane/cen_dettaglio.php?id=426.

 

Discovering Palmanova

The town of Palmanova features a military fortress built by the Serenissima Republic of Venice. A two-hour guided English and Italian tour of the city takes place every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Borgo Udine 4. The tour costs 2 euro. Discovering Grado bike tour

An all-day 33-kilometer bicycle ride takes place through city of Grado and the Natural Reserves of the Cavanta Valley and Isonzo River. The tour costs 7 euro. A valid ID is required for bike rental. For more information, email info@gradoturismo.org.

 

Select gas stations open on Sundays, holidays

 

Check here each week to find out which local gas station(s) offer full services during Sundays and holidays and use NATO gas coupons. While these gas stations are scheduled to be open, this schedule is subject to change without notice. When closed, members may still purchase gas with euro using the kiosks located near the pumps, or use the gas coupons at Agip’s gas stations located along the autostrada.

On AP Highway heading toward Aviano, the station is the first Agip on the left side after passing Area F.

Neighborhood networking

 

The “Vicini Americani,” or American Neighbors, program is designed to connect Americans in their Italian communities. Under the program, Team Aviano volunteers - designated as Community Liaisons for their respective comunes - help to welcome newcomers, organize local gatherings and inform people about upcoming community events. Vendors sell fresh produce, flowers, clothing and goods from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following markets:

-The Pordenone outdoor market takes place in the city square

every Wednesday and Saturday

-The Sacile outdoor market takes place in Viale Zancanaro every Thursday

Antique Markets

 

Vendors sell clothing, furniture, art, household goods and more from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following antique markets:

 

Saturday:

-The Codroipo antique market takes place in Piazza Garibaldi with about 40 exhibitors

-The Montereale antique market takes place in Piazza Roma with about 30 exhibitors

-The Udine antique market takes place in Piazza I Maggio with about 70 exhibitors

 

Sunday:

-The Aviano antique market takes place in the city centre with about 200 exhibitors

-The San Vito al Tagliamento antique market takes place in Piazza del Popolo with about 70 exhibitors

All trips are offered by the Information, Tickets and Travel Office unless otherwise noted. Registration deadlines are used to make decisions about cancelling trips due to lack of participation. ITT will still accept sign-ups if the trip is not cancelled.
