U.S. Special Forces soldiers prepare to patrol with Afghan army special forces during an operation in the Ghorband district in Afghanistan's Parwan province, Jan. 15, 2014. Afghan and U.S. forces conducted the operation with the goal of capturing several targets known for Taliban activity. The U.S. soldiers are assigned to the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force Afghanistan.

U.S. soldiers conduct a live-fire exercise on their M119 and M777 howitzers as they await a mission in Afghanistan, Jan. 15, 2014. The soldiers are assigned to the 10th Mountain Division's 4th Battalion 25th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
