Celebrating a Year of Achievements
As we close another year of terrific work here at the
Department of Commerce, I want to take a moment to look back and reflect on all
we accomplished together in 2015. We made great progress on our Open for
Business Agenda, and I want to thank all of our Commerce team and our external
partners for your hard work to make this year a success.
On the Trade and Investment front, we supported the
completion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and hosted more than 2,600
participants from all over the world at the 2015 SelectUSA Investment Summit.
Secretary Penny Pritzker broke new ground in commercial diplomacy, becoming the
first Commerce Secretary to visit Cuba in more than 50 years and holding
the first-ever regulatory dialogue. Under the Innovation pillar, we built
out our new Digital Economy Agenda and our cross-functional digital
team, and formally launched our Skills for Business initiative to
cement the Department’s role in job-driven talent development.
As part of our Data priority, we created the
startup-inspired Commerce Data Service and engaged public innovators
through data competitions such as NIST’s Global Cities Team Challenge.
In support of the Department’s critical work in internet privacy and security,
Deputy Secretary Bruce Andrews led a delegation of U.S. companies on a cybersecurity
trade mission to Romania and Poland.
On the Environment front, we provided critical data
and leadership in our efforts to respond to climate change, launched the DSCOVR satellite to enhance
capabilities to monitor environmental conditions, and opened the National Water Center to
provide the nation with enhanced forecasts and services. Finally, our great DOC
team is working every day on providing Operational Excellence through
our shared services initiative
between bureaus and creating a robust onboarding program for our senior
leaders centered on the Department’s core values.
While our team enjoys some well-earned rest and relaxation,
Commerce Week at a Glance will take a two-week hiatus and return on Friday,
January 8, 2016. I wish you all a happy holiday season, and I look forward to a
busy and successful new year at the Department of Commerce.
All the best,
Jim Hock Chief of Staff Department of Commerce

One Year Later: Reflecting on a New Chapter in U.S.-Cuba Relations Blog post by Penny Pritzker, Secretary of Commerce
On December 17, 2014, President Obama made the historic announcement that the United States would no longer be held captive by the past and would instead move toward normalizing relations with the island of Cuba. This shift in policy was rooted in a fundamental desire to improve the lives of people in both our nations. We want to help the Cuban people connect to the global economy and enjoy a higher standard of living, while also giving the people of the United States an opportunity to learn about a country that is only 90 miles off our shores.

Having traveled to Mexico twice in the last two months and four times in the past year, one overarching theme has become clear: the U.S. and Mexico are firmly on a path to becoming a model of a modern commercial partnership. My recent trip to Mexico served to reinforce this message in three important ways.

Warmer air and sea, declining ice continue to trigger Arctic change
A new NOAA-sponsored report shows that air temperature in 2015 across the Arctic was well above average with temperature anomalies over land more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit above average, the highest since records began in 1900. Increasing air and sea surface temperatures, decreasing sea ice extent and Greenland ice sheet mass, and changing behavior of fish and walrus are among key observations released today in the Arctic Report Card 2015.

U.S. Department of Commerce's 15 Most Popular Blogs of 2015 As we close out the year 2015, we also mark two years since the launch of the Commerce Department’s Open for Business Agenda, a bold policy priorities framework for the Department of Commerce, centered on the tools needed for U.S. economic growth. These tools include U.S. trade and investment, innovation, data, environmental intelligence, and operational excellence, and this agenda reflects the Department’s role as the voice of business, as well as the Obama Administration’s keen focus on economic growth and job creation.
