Dear Valued Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN) Partner,
Last week, we celebrated the final day of the technical migration from HSIN Legacy to HSIN Release 3 (R3). This is our most significant milestone to date. As a valued HSIN user, your feedback, assistance and patience have helped to shape HSIN R3. On behalf of the HSIN Program Office, we want to thank you. We look forward to working with you to continue growing and innovating this vital tool in the homeland security community.
You Asked…We Answered: "I’m getting an error message when I sign on to HSIN R3?”
The easiest way to overcome an issue with signing in is to close out of HSIN, and re-authenticate yourself. To do this properly, you need to utilize the “single sign-out” button on the top right corner of your computer screen. This will help ensure you close your active session and prevent the possibility of not being able sign on again for up to one hour. As a reminder, simply closing your web browser does not sufficiently sign you out of HSIN R3 and will generate an authentication error when you try to sign in at a later time. Once you’ve properly logged out of HSIN R3, the next time you open your browser, you will be given the option to re-authenticate yourself.
Last Big Week for Large-Scale Migrations to HSIN R3
We are pleased to welcome the following large-scale migrations to HSIN R3:
-
DHS Maritime Operations Coordination (DHS MOC-P): This community exists to foster information sharing to achieve coordination of maritime security operations across the nation, with subsites for almost every state and large city along the coast of the United States.
-
Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO): This very large and complex community supports information sharing among DNDO stakeholders through 11 subsites involving thousands of documents and a large number of active users.
-
Deep Water Horizon: This site was migrated to support continued records management of communications associated with events subsequent to the Large Oil spill from the British Petroleum well in the Gulf of Mexico during 2009.
-
Special Events Working Group: This is a new community developed and deployed to immediately support reporting of significant events across the country. This site helps planners prepare for event security and emergency services locally, regionally, and nationally.
-
Super Bowl 2013 Archive: This site contains all of the support materials used to support Super Bowl 2013 and was migrated to HSIN R3 to retain the unique support facilities for potential reuse.
-
War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration: This large site migrated all the special support facilities and content developed and used during support of this event during 2012.
US Coast Guard (USCG) Collaborates in Real Time Using HSIN R3
USCG Sector New Orleans and USCG Marine Safety Unit Morgan City utilized HSIN Connect as a means to collaborate in real time on incident data and to process requests for information related to a recent oil platform fire in the Gulf of Mexico. Serving as a virtual Situational Display Board (see image), HSIN Connect allowed members involved of the incident to stay informed of progress and actions without the need to be physically located in the Incident Command Post. In addition, HSIN Connect allowed for the real time dissemination of critical incident information both up and down the chain of command.

HSIN Help Desk Call Volume
We have heard from many of you that you are experiencing extended delays in trying to reach the HSIN Help Desk. We apologize for the extended wait times, but wanted to inform you that we anticipate call volume to decrease due to the end of migration. During the last week for example, wait times have decreased by 50 percent. We are also in the process of introducing a “voice-mail” feature, which will allow callers to leave a message instead of remaining on hold. We hope to be able to deploy a feature that can provide callers with queue placement and expected wait times in the coming weeks. As a reminder, you can always email the help desk (hsin.helpdesk@hq.dhs.gov) too. Thank you in advance for your patience.
Training Opportunities
Looking for something to do this summer? Remember that we are continuing to expand the number of HSIN R3 training opportunities. Currently there are two types of training: Instructor-Led and Computer Based Training (CBT). You can register for training sessions by logging into HSIN R3 and following this link: HSIN Training. CBTs are also now available at HSIN CBTs . If you have any questions regarding training, contact the HSIN Outreach Team at hsin.outreach@hq.dhs.gov for assistance.
Reminder to Save your HSIN Legacy Connect Content this Week!
Have questions about saving your Legacy HSIN Connect content? We’re sending out a separate message this week with super helpful instructions on how to download and save all your content and recorded meetings in HSIN Connect on Legacy. Don’t have any Legacy meetings to worry about? You can still keep the instructions to be used with Release 3 HSIN Connect!
