SEVP Stakeholders: Check Out New Employment Resources on Study in the States

The start of summer marks a period when many F and M international students begin employment and/or practical training opportunities, and with that comes reporting requirements and the need to look out for fraudulent activity. This helps ensure the integrity of the system so international students can gain practical work experience while studying in the U.S. Visit new employment resources on Study in the States.

Practical Training Overview

Download the new F-1 Practical Training Overview in the Resource Library. The resource outlines the differences between training opportunities, including:

  • When it occurs
  • Length requirements
  • Employer requirements

Recognize the Signs of a Potentially Fraudulent Employer

While SEVP is constantly monitoring to mitigate fraudulent employment activity involving international students, school officials and students should also familiarize themselves with potential fraud indicators and know how to report suspected fraud. SEVP recently published a blog post on the signs of a potentially fraudulent employer.

School officials or students who believe they have encountered fraudulent activity should contact the Homeland Security Investigations Tip Line or the SEVP Response Center. Read the new blog post on Study in the States for a list of tips for students and school officials.

Resources for Determining Whether There is a Direct Relationship Between a Job and Course of Study

Federal regulations allow F-1 students to apply for authorization to participate in optional practical training that directly relates to their major area of study. On Sept. 30, 2019, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) published new policy guidance titled, “Practical Training: Determining a Direct Relationship Between Employment and a Student’s Major Area of Study.” The guidance explains that students are responsible for providing a description of how their job duties relate to their major area of study, which their designated school official (DSO) must review and retain in the students’ files.

Read the new blog post on Study in the States for an overview of the guidance and resources available to DSOs.
