EDAMI’s Engagement with Region 2 in New York

The Enterprise Data and Analytics Modernization Initiative (EDAMI) is very happy to announce we have begun getting FEMA Data Exchange (FEMADex) functionality into the hands of our users, and we have big plans to keep on expanding. We are excited to share highlights from our recent engagement with Region 2, our plans to kick-off our First Adopter Program, and the status of our upcoming Authorization to Proceed (ATP).

Last month, we sent the EDAMI Engagement Team to Region 2 headquarters in New York City. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Regional Administrator David Warrington for welcoming us in, to Dale McShine for her leadership in making the event a success, and to the very impressive group of committed and highly technical analysts we worked with at Region 2. We spent three days together conducting hands-on exploration and testing of the FEMADex system. For those who may not be familiar with FEMADex, it is the cloud-based data analytics platform we are building to replace the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). FEMADex will provide a central location to discover, create, analyze, and share datasets and data products with users inside and outside of FEMA, supporting data-driven decision-making across the emergency management community. Currently, FEMADex is in its Pilot Phase, during which the EDAMI team is refining our understanding of users’ needs and improving the FEMADex solution to address those needs.

While working with Region 2, we demonstrated FEMADex capabilities through hands-on-keyboard activities utilizing a series of use cases considering equity analysis and disaster operations. More specifically, Region 2 analysts used FEMADex to:

  • Discover and access data from external sources including OpenFEMA and Census (data from FEMA source systems can be ingested into FEMADex after we get our ATP)
  • Curate datasets, create new derived datasets, and develop dashboards for their analysis
  • Collaborate with teammates in tools like Databricks to perform analyses together
  • Add data products to their Team Workspace and the FEMA Enterprise Workspace to share their findings with others
