SUNDAY: FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS TO BE HONORED AT NATIONAL MEMORIAL SERVICE
EMMITSBURG, MARYLAND – The 31st National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Sunday, October 7, at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) will honor those firefighters who fell in service to their Nation. The service will be held at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The names of 80 fallen firefighters from 2011 and five from previous years will be added to bronze plaques that surround the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, honoring the service of more than 3,600 fallen firefighters. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate, U. S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell, Jr. and National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) Chairman of the Board, Chief Dennis Compton, will pay tribute at the service for the sacrifice of the fallen.

Thirty-one states and the Territory of Guam lost firefighters in 2011. Two other states that had firefighters pass in previous years are also being honored. More than 6,000 people, including Members of Congress, Administration officials and other dignitaries, members of the fire service, and families, friends, and co-workers of the fallen firefighters will attend the event. Families will receive flags flown over the U. S. Capitol and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. Members of the fire service, honor guard units, and pipe and drum units from across the U.S. will participate in this national observance.
