The length and availability of automatic extensions of Temporary Protected Status (TPS)-based Forms I-766, Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) have been affected by: 

1. Federal Register notices unique to specific countries;
2. The DHS interim final rule, effective Oct. 30, 2025; and
3. USCIS implementation of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) on July 22, 2025. 

In most cases, these developments have reduced or eliminated the automatic extension periods for qualifying TPS applicants and beneficiaries with TPS-based EADs. The DHS interim final rule, effective Oct. 30, 2025, and USCIS implementation of H.R. 1 on July 22, 2025, also affected other EAD categories. As a result, Sections 5.0 through 5.3 of the M-274, Handbook for Employers, have been revised.
