SCHEDULED/MI - LAKE HURON – SAGINAW RIVER/BRIDGE/CGD-GL BNM 0005-26

united states coast guard

From December 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025, December 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026, and from December 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027, the Lafayette Street Bridge at Mile 6.78, over the Saginaw River will be secured to masted navigation. Vessels able to pass under the bridge without an opening may do so at any time. Additionally, starting on October 1, 2024, six barges 80x190-foot or smaller will be working under the bridge, and they will move if a 3-hour advance notice is provided by calling 608-475-8851, or 608-610-9374, or 989-293-5892. From December 15, 2024, through November 30, 2025, a cofferdam will be installed that measures approximately 60-feet by 95-feet, that reduces the navigation channel by 4-feet on either side leaving approximately 140-foot channel available for vessels. The red pier lights will be moved to the cofferdam sides to show the temporary reduction in horizontal clearance. From November 4, 2024, through November 15, 2028, trestles will be installed extending outward from shore approximately 50-feet. Flashing yellow lights will warn mariners of the trestle’s location. From February 1, 2026, through March 29, 2028, heel girders will be installed on the four corners of the bridge to enable the new drawspan to be opened during construction. These girders will extend an additional 2-feet into the channel reducing the horizontal clearance to approximately 136-feet. During the winter, the ice will degrade due to the movement of barges and the ice under the bridge should be considered unsafe for pedestrians or vehicles.
