1. In alignment with REFs (A) and (B), and as part of the Coast
Guard's efforts to revolutionize its organizational structure and
enhance mission readiness under Force Design 2028, the U.S. Coast
Guard established the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division within the
Office of Design and Engineering Standards (CG-ENG). This new
division will serve as the Coast Guard's central contact to develop
and implement policies governing the safe and secure integration of
nuclear technology within the Marine Transportation System.
2. The Maritime Nuclear Policy Division will advance the Coast
Guard's leadership role in the Marine Transportation System to
develop a comprehensive framework to govern the adoption of nuclear
technologies. Key responsibilities include:
a. Develop international and domestic policy and guidance, to
facilitate the safe and secure operation of floating nuclear power
plants and commercial nuclear-powered propulsion vessels.
b. Collaborate with the International Maritime Organization,
federal agencies, and industry to update international and domestic
regulations and agreements with regards to maritime nuclear
advancements.
c. Advocate statutory and policy changes to implement standards
for nuclear vessel design, construction, operation, security, and
environmental safeguards.
d. Maintain relationships with nuclear industry leaders,
academia, and national labs to stay informed of advancements in
reactor technology and maritime applications.
3. The establishment of the Maritime Nuclear Policy Division
directly supports REFs (C) and (D) by fostering innovation and
ensuring the responsible development of advanced nuclear
technologies within the maritime sector.
