SUBJ: ANNOUNCEMENT OF CG MARINE SAFETY CYBERSECURITY COURSE
AVAILABILITY
1. This message announces a new mandatory CG Marine Safety
Cybersecurity Course for all active and reserve MSTs, all Prevention
officers O5 and below, all Prevention civilians, and all Port
Security Specialists (PSSs).
2. Cyber threats in the marine transportation system (MTS) continue
to evolve. Protecting the MTS is one of the key lines of effort in
the Coast Guard Cyber Strategic Outlook. To action that line of
effort, the Strategic Outlooks says the Coast Guard will develop
expertise in the cybersecurity of maritime information technology
and operational technology within the Coast Guard workforce to
support prevention and response activities. While the Coast Guard
has managed several cyber-related workshops and courses to build
proficiency for segments of the workforce, this will be the first
course available across the Service.
3. As our activities in cyber continue to grow, Coast Guard
personnel must be familiar with basic cyber terminology related to
the MTS and be able to communicate using basic cyber terminology
with cybersecurity personnel. We must also be prepared to respond to
cyber incidents that could result in physical security impacts or
widespread disruption to the MTS. Building these competencies
requires ongoing commitment and focus from across the Prevention
community.
4. The Marine Safety Cybersecurity Course (100683) is available on
CG OWL and located under the Mandated Training B (MT-B). It is the
responsibility of command and unit Training Officer (TO) to
coordinate unit MT and assign the training to their members. All MT
shall be reported by each unit in the training management tool (TMT)
database. The Marine Safety Cybersecurity Course (100683) can be
found under competency code MRNE-SAFE-CYSEC.
5. This course is designed to provide baseline knowledge of cyber
literacy and risk management to the marine safety workforce. This
course consists of six modules and covers topics such as components
of technology systems, cybersecurity threats, best practices,
relevant policies and resources, inspections, and incident response.
6. The course incorporates guidance from both government and
industry sources, with approximately 14 hours of total content,
which can be completed over multiple sessions for flexibility.
7. This training was developed collaboratively with MTSS-Cs,
CG AUXCYBER, MCRB, CG-791, CG-CVC, and CGCYBER, and was built for
the CG OWL platform by FORCECOM.
8. This course is mandatory biennially for all active and reserve
MSTs, all Prevention officers O5 and below, all Prevention
civilians, and all Port Security Specialists (PSSs).
9. The course is highly encouraged for all other Sector personnel
that could be involved in cyber prevention and response activities.
10. This training shall be completed by 15 DEC 2025.
