C. 29 CFR 1910.179(b)(5)
1. IAW REFs (A) and (B), all Coast Guard-owned weight handling
and material handling equipment (W/MHE) shall be inspected to
verify the asset has an accurate manufacturer's data plate
permanently affixed and legible. Discrepancies identified with
manufacturer's data plates will be reported to the Support
Equipment Product Line (SEPL) via a Technical and Equipment
Authorization Request (TEAR).
2. IAW REFs (A) and (C), all Coast Guard-owned W/MHE shall be
inspected to verify the asset has accurate and visible exterior
markings. Clear asset markings ensure riggers, signalpersons,
safety supervisors, and bystanders have awareness of the asset's
capability. Markings may be painted, stenciled, or affixed by
other means that clearly mark the exterior. Vinyl adhesive or
retroreflective tape/stickers are authorized.
3. The markings must be applied on both sides of the asset in
three-inch black block letters on a yellow background. They may
be applied on one large background, or separately in alternating
locations on the same side of the asset in the most conspicuous
area.
4. If these instructions cannot be followed due to constraints
imposed by the size of available space, or other limiting
characteristics of the support equipment, a waiver shall be
requested via the SEPL using the TEAR process at:

Numbers shall be one inch or larger. The background size shall be
six inches in height by nine inches in width, or larger. Smaller
sizes are not authorized.
