SUBJ: MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY: HONORING DR. KING'S LEGACY
1. On January 20, 2025, we celebrate and honor the enduring
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observed annually on the
third Monday in January, MLK Jr. Day is the only federal holiday
designated as a National Day of Service. The perennial theme,
"Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not a Day Off," encourages
all Americans to volunteer and work to improve their communities.
2. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Selma to
Montgomery marches, a series of protests led by Dr. King and
other civil rights advocates to stop voter suppression.
Dr. King's advocacy and leadership, and the determination of
those who marched with him during these protests, helped lead
to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of many
monumental achievements in Dr. King's career.
3. Dr. King's commitment to justice, equality, and service
resonates with the Coast Guard's Core Values of Honor, Respect,
and Devotion to Duty. Our Coast Guard workforce serves the
American public every day by saving lives, protecting our
national security, and ensuring our economic prosperity. We also
actively support local communities through volunteer efforts that
make a positive impact.
4. On this MLK Jr. Day and throughout the year, I encourage you
to recognize and celebrate Dr. King's contributions to this country
and continue to honor his legacy of service by volunteering,
mentoring, and supporting those in need. Together, we can
strengthen ties in our communities, make a difference, and
influence positive change.
