SUBJ:  2024 COAST GUARD ART COLLECTION ACCEPTED JULY 11TH IN
NEW YORK CITY
1. RADM Michael Platt, Commander, First Coast Guard District,
officially accepted 36 new works by 31 member artists of the Coast
Guard Art Program (COGAP) on 11 July 2024 at the Salmagundi Club in
New York City. RDML Platt thanked the artists for their outstanding
contributions and lauded the support the program receives from the
Salmagundi Club and the New York Council of the Navy League. The
Salmagundi Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
promotion and support of art and artists and has served as the art
program’s sponsor since COGAP’s inception in 1981.
2. COGAP artist Ken Stetz won this year’s George Gray Award, COGAP's
best in show award. Mr. Stetz's winning painting, "Absorbing the
Roll" depicts members of CGC ANGELA MCSHAN and CGC SENECA conducting
joint search and rescue drills on a simulated disabled vessel.
3. COGAP uses art as an outreach tool for educating diverse audiences
about the Coast Guard. Through displays at museums, libraries, and
patriotic events, the art tells the story of the Coast Guard’s
missions and the vital work performed by service members. Art is also
displayed in offices of Members of Congress, senior officials of the
Executive Branch of government, other military services, and at Coast
Guard locations throughout the country. All works are given freely to
the Service by COGAP artist members who receive no compensation for
time or materials. The 2024 collection was on display from July 1
through July 26, 2024, at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. It
will be on display for two months starting July 31 at Federal Hall
National Memorial, a Manhattan venue near the New York Stock
Exchange.
4. The program, now in its 43rd year, has art on display in museums
across the country, with additional exhibitions slated for later this
year.
5. Units can support COGAP in several ways, including:
    a. Unit CO/OICs can inform the COGAP coordinator (email address
below) of upcoming unit missions that might be of visual interest to
COGAP artists and act as host, allowing the COGAP artist member to
capture source material to use in paintings or drawings;
    b. Assist in local recruiting efforts by suggesting talented
artists, service members, and civilians contact the COGAP coordinator
for information on how to join the program;
    c. Recommend to the COGAP coordinator local venues that would be
appropriate to host COGAP exhibitions, such as local museums, town
halls, and state houses; and,
    d. In consultation with the COGAP coordinator, provide speakers or
support demonstrations (for example search and rescue demos or
vertical insertions) at COGAP events to enhance attendance. These
events should be free and open to, and accessible by, the public.
