SUBJ: AY25 CG ACADEMY COMPANY CHIEF PETTY OFFICER SOLICITATION

A. Military Assignments and Authorized Absences, COMDTINST M1000.8A

1. All members are highly encouraged to pursue at least one Special Assignment during their career. These career broadening assignments provide members valuable opportunities to represent their Ratings, network, and learn about other operational and mission support activities, making them ideal candidates for future assignments to highly visible leadership and management positions (e.g. Silver Badge, OIC, School Chief).

2. This message solicits candidates and outlines the application process for members interested in a special duty assignment as a Company Chief at the Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT. The Coast Guard Academy (CGA) prepares young men and women to become commissioned officers to lead in the Coast Guard and is our Services sole federal service academy. As such, the CGA provides a rigorous undergraduate education, collegiate athletic experience, and 200-week military leader development program. It is a highly selective institution and home to a Corps of Cadets of over 1,000 who come from diverse backgrounds, including international cadets. The ideal Company Chief wants to develop their skills as both an equity-minded and inclusive leader and positively impact the future Coast Guard officer corps. Company Chiefs are role models in creating a positive command climate and strongly influence how cadets will lead as officers and how capable they will

be at balancing mission requirements while taking care of a diverse total workforce. Company Chiefs advise and guide these young men and women through tough interpersonal, accountability, and leadership challenges leveraging their experiences in the operational Coast Guard and their deep commitment to the Core Values. Company Chiefs serve as role models, mentors, and

facilitators of the Chase Hall Leader Development Practicum. This requires baseline knowledge of the Coast Guards diversity and inclusion goals, CG leadership models/theories and the ability to train and coach cadets in the practice of this knowledge. As leadership practitioners,

Company Chiefs bring operational expertise and relevance to the day-to-day activities of the regiment and by their personal example, set the highest standards of appearance, professionalism, moral, ethical, and social conduct. Ultimately, the role of the Company Chief is to provide an understanding of the strengths of the enlisted work force with whom cadets will work with and rely upon for the rest of their careers. Company Chiefs receive Special Duty Assignment Pay AP-2.
