SUBJ: DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE
1. Days of Remembrance is an annual, week-long commemoration of the
Holocaust, during which we remember the persecution and murder of
six million Jews and five million others, such as Romani and Sinti
peoples, people with mental and physical disabilities, and members
of the LGBTQ+ community, by Nazi Germany and its collaborators
between 1933 and 1945.
2. On October 7, 1980, Congress passed legislation that established
the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, charging the group with
commemorating the Days of Remembrance and oversight of the Holocaust
Memorial Museum, which was completed in 1993. Days of Remembrance
begins the Sunday before Yom HaShoah, which means Holocaust
Remembrance Day in Hebrew and ends the following Sunday. The Hebrew
calendar is a lunar calendar, so the date changes each year. This
year, Days of Remembrance will be observed in the U.S. from May 5
through May 12, 2024, with Yom HaShoah on May 6.
3. Behind every name of those killed, those who survived, and those
who risked their lives to rescue, is a story. General Dwight D.
Eisenhower wrote after visiting the Ohrdruf camp outside Gotha,
Germany, soon after its liberation in April 1945, "The visual
evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and
bestiality were so overpowering…I made the visit deliberately, in
order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these
things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge
these allegations merely to 'propaganda'". Likewise, President Biden
proclaimed in 2023, "The right of remembrance becomes more urgent
with each passing year, as fewer survivors remain to share their
stories and open our eyes to the harms of unchecked hatred."
4. Days of Remembrance is a solemn observance and a time to educate
the workforce on the Holocaust. Hosting commemorations and other
activities that honor the millions of victims persecuted and
murdered, while also promoting respect for human life and human
rights inspires the courage to act against hate and other actions
that do not align with our Core Values of Honor, Respect, and
Devotion to Duty. For guidance and proper methods to recognize Days
